The issue picks up where the previous one left off, with Dr. Strange unleashing the tentacles...

They bring the unconscious Strange with them back to their own Earth.

God, reading all of his dialogue in Bill Cosby's voice would make the whole thing so much more bearable. Sadly, my Bill Cosby impersonation is shit.

That...wasn't what Namor was saying at all. Namor knows that this is a horrific act beneath any being, no matter how low but in his eyes the cost of not acting is greater still. Note that after dealing with the Great Society and Strange they have less than 10 minutes before not only both earths but both universes are destroyed and this was literal the only other available option.

God, this just pisses me off. You have this scene that's a clear lead for them finding a real heroic alternative, finding a solution that doesn't involve blowing up a planet, actually being the good guys for once and Namor fucks it up.

So Namor's going to jail forever now, right? I mean, that planet was definitely close enough that millions of people were probably able to see it explode like that. And the rest of the Illuminati are guilt-ridden enough that I can't imagine them NOT selling out Namor and the whole bomb plot the second people start asking questions. Literally every superhero, if not every government, will be hunting him down for committing genocide on a scale rivaled only by Thanos himself. I don't see any way for him to come out of this as anything but a full-blown supervillain at this point.

So Namor ended up being the sacrificial lamb the one who crossed the line for the greater good so Marvel can later try to rehab these characters. Though frankly since they were working toward this from the very beginning instead of working on a solution that wouldn't kill I'd say they are all still guilty in this.

I mean ignoring the bad writing and clearly scripted nature of this whole mess. Namor is actually in the right here. They went down this road, they decided it was their only option and at the end they weren't willing to do what they said was their only choice. I mean it never should have come to this since any long time reader can propose several typical comic solutions to this mess and it was clearly all about having this moment which Hickman hopes will be one of those enduring Oh crap moments but probably has more in common with Hank slapping Janet than say the Death of Kara or Barry in Crisis.

But once the bad writing had maneuvered them to this point them acting appalled at Namor pushing the button just makes them hypocrites in addition to their shared guilt in genocide.

So has the book elaborated on the big threat that's coming which is so bad that Stark turned the rouge Planet into a bullet, Black Bolt creating an army during Infinty, and why the Avengers team is set up the way it is and all this icky genocide.

It was because he was using magic that appeared to be uncontrollable and could threaten their earth as well. Plus they might find killing a planet by having Cthulhu drag it into the abyss and devour their souls worse than an explosion that kills them before they realize it.

When the mindwipe of Captain America was revealed, it seemed to me that the "World Destroyer Bomb" wasn't the *easiest* thing for the Illuminati to do, it was the *only* thing the Illuminati could do. There isn't anything here that contradicts this.

Date: 2014-08-06 08:44 pm (UTC)
From: [personal profile] drtechnobabel
Problem is, the reason it became the only thing they could do in the first place was because after mindwiping Cap, they pretty much stopped looking for other options altogether, instead spending all their time watching other planets and arguing about whether using the bomb was right or not.

You build your bomb, knowing what it'll do, without investing into alternatives that the most brilliant people on the planet should be able to come up with.....then you're all too chickenshit to pull the trigger. Except Namor, who pretty much watches from the sidelines as this thing is created, then steps in to fulfill the role as the only one with actual conviction.

Can we please drop these characters into a black hole and forget about them for a couple of years? They've all been tainted to the point they should be shuttered away and put in time-out for a while.

Or maybe we just drop Hickman in there.

I believe they were investing in alternatives the entire way up until this point actually.

And owning a gun is different from shooting it. I can't fault them for realising the grand scale of it all once they're actually pushed to the point. IThat kind of punishing attitude towards them is something i'd expect from the marvel in universe civilians who are fairly unforgiving.

Yeah its a little dirty how Tony just washes his hands of it, and same with the others, but i can see why. They built it as a last resort, to have the option, none of them out right set out to use it in absoluteness, so they were only committed to the possibility of the idea.

Unlike Captain America who wouldn't fathom it. What would he have done in this very situation? (which would have likely have come sooner if they didn't mind wipe him)

Honestly I don't even blame Namor at this point.

The Illuminati just murdered the Great Society, the only people on that other Earth who knew about the Incursions and were working to stop them. Even if the Illuminati had found some other way to stop this Incursion, Earth-4290001 would have been vulnerable the next time it had an Incursion. They were completely fucked over by the Illuminati

So at any point in this story arc, has the idea of teleporting the incoming planet out of the way ever been brought up? Or setting one of the Earths out of phase so they pass through each other harmlessly, like Kitty Pryde did with that ginormous 'space bullet'?

Like others have said in this post, there is a right way to do this kind of story. Where you see the weight of universes on their shoulders and you can actually see them struggle with the right thing to do instead of going all Michael Bay on it. I just don't think Jonathan Hickman was interested in telling that kind of story because he wanted heroes doing despicable acts because "moral relativism".

Namor blowing up Great Society World is in character with him not just because of his convictions and duty to his people, but because of his arrogant, self-righteous, egotistical, narcissistic self. Who's willing to wager that Namor will have little to no regrets about what he just did and shows no signs (whether outwardly or in captions) of remorse that things got to this point?

So is the point of HIckman's run on everything Avengers and Infinity basically boiling down to character assassination? On a day when it feels like Namor has taken the moral high-ground, I don't know quite what to say.

If I understand this, parallel universe earths (and ONLY earths?) keep coming to smash into ours (but apparenly no other planet in the universe). The only alternative that the Illuminati come up with (in the act of keeping this information to themselves) as the interdimensional deathmatch continues is basically continually destroying those other universes (or just their Earths, still unclear on the exacts).

And they've exhausted every LAST SINGLE POSSIBLE OPTION. Or at least, they keep saying that, then finding ANOTHER one, like Strange here. I mean, if the story were, we stole the M'Kraan crystal from the Shiar and started a war....I'd get it. If it was, I went to Sataanish or Nightmare and sold my soul to save us all...I'd get it.

But this story not only makes them looks stupid and incompetent, but ineffectual. There is no hero in this story, just pragmatists who ultimately can even carry out their desperate act. It just all feels so FORCED.
