"The Shadow Knows..."

With the background laid out, we cut to the Shadow down by the docks in New York City, where two Japanese spies have arrived, having decided to board a ship to steal some mineral samples from a geological survey in Sierra Leone. Despite the US not being at war with Japan yet, the Shadow has arrived to kill the two men, having seen that they are part of something that will bring great calamity to the world.

He gives the spies' henchmen one chance to leave or he'll kill them too... One mook drops his gun, meaning he's the only one that survives after the Shadow teleports behind them to shoot them all from behind. He then refers to the (now former) henchman by name, and tells him to go back to his family, which he does and at greet speed while he interrogates the corpse of one of the spies by temporarily returning him to life for questioning...

Later, millionaire playboy Lamont Cranston meets up with a friend of his from the last war, from when the two of them worked in US military intelligence. The spy, a man by the name of Mr Anders, arrives with his protege in tow, the much younger Pat Finnegan. It seems that the deaths of the men down by the pier has been labeled a gangland shooting (despite all the bullets having come from just two pistols), but due to the occupation of the men and the contents of the ship they attempted to rob it's become an issue of concern of the American government.

However, it seems that despite the results of the survey not being avaliable, Cranston already had told Anders that the mineral would be useless some months back when he first offered his services to the secret service. Due to Lamont's intelligence, it seems more likely that the necessary material will be found in the East, China to be exact, which is where the elder brother of one of the spies, a Taro Kondo, is headed having left Japan some days prior.

As such, and due to Lamont's past in the area, Anders has decided to commission him to go to China with Pat to intercept the second batch of minerals before Kondo and the Japanese army get there first. Cranston agrees, though his kind of smug "I know everything" attitude is, naturally, rubbing Pat the wrong way. As Lamont leaves, Pat questions why (inside information or not) why they're involving such a flippant, know-it-all civilian in their top secret mission. Anders just pats him on the shoulder and tells him not to worry about it.

Outside, a child bumps into Cranston, and we're witness to what happens when he tries to be nice.

Later, he meets up with his partner Margot Lane, and explains part of how and why he's able to do what he does...

"Longer than you'll be Margot Lane."
"What does that mean?"
*cryptic laughter*

I've heard it said that during World War II, the Japanese did things to the Chinese and Koreans that made the Germans "look like talented amateurs." It's the "talented amateurs" part that I always remember.

How is it even possible for a nation to 'deserve' to be conquered and occupied, its history ripped up and its culture stamped under the dirt(EDIT: just noticed that Ennis used that same rhetorical flourish), its people denigrated and abused and its empress murdered and raped? I am not sure what that would be a reasonable response to.

Part of Japan's relative lack of remorse over WW II is that the West's lingering guilt over the use of the atom bombs at Hiroshima and Nagasaki allows Japan to pull out the "victim" card.
