Wow, both a lot happened and not much happened, but I'll try and summarise.

The Joker attempts to re-enact the 1989 Batman movie by parading down the middle of Gotham with poisonous carnival floats, and Batman enlists his rogues gallery in order to subdue Mr J so they can extract his spinal fluid to create a cure for the Joker's laughing plague.

The plan nearly works... if it wasn't for the Joker disabling both the rogues and the Bat Family with a ridiculously loud noise that scatters their gas masks. The Joker takes time out to gloat about how if Batman had known his city a little better than he would have known that there's an entire pool of the chemical needed to cure the plague below the city, and now he's going to die having failed spectacularly...

...Only for him to unmask Batman and for Dick Grayson to be under the cowl, to the Joker's surprise. So, yay, the Bat Famiyl presumably know he's still alive!

Turns out that Dick was acting as a distraction while Batman homed in on the broadcast signal from the cameras the Joker placed watching the pool, Bruce having figured that he must have had a stock of the chemical somewhere.

Unfortunately, the Joker shows up, having worked out what Batman was up to, and a really brutal fight breaks out between the two. The Joker burns a portion of Batman's face, stabs in through both shoulders, and jabs a sharpened playing card into one of his eyes, while Batman injects the Joker with a chemical that counteracts the Joker's new healing factor.

IF the Joker is who he says he is, then he'll still regenerate just slower than usual... But if he's a normal person who lucked out on finding a chemical that accelerates healing only a short time ago like Bruce thinks, then he'll need a new dose to heal those injures.

With his back broken, the Joker tries to crawl into the pit in order to heal himself before the cave collapses, only for Batman to grab him and hold him down until an enormous rock blocks off the chemical from both of them.

The cavern collapses, sealing the paralysed Joker and dying Batman within.

Time passes. The Bat Family and the citizens of Gotham having been healed by the cure Julia was able to make from the samples Bruce collected before the Joker showed up. Alfred is in the hospital and Julia says that they were able to reserve his severed hand so that they'll be able to reattach it, but the depressed Alfred isn't that keen. Reasoning that there's no one left for him to patch up now.

They talk for a while about how is it that Batman never bothered to use any of the things he's come across over the years to make himself immortal, be it magic, supertech or whatever. Alfred says that Bruce knew that he was a tragic figure, so that for him dying was always the way his story was going to end, as there wasn't any other way it COULD end... But he also knew that that was why you had to make the most of what little time you had, as that's what make you human. Working together and smiling at the void.

Which is probably why Bruce's last message to his friends and family is just one word.

"Ha."

---

...Might be alone in this, but I enjoyed this story. Everything is rolled together quite nicely, with an out readily avaliable for when or if they wanted to bring Bruce and the Joker back again. And, really, the Joker had to die in some form once he showed he knew who Bruce was, otherwise the dynamic between them would have changed too thoroughly. Don't expect it to stick when he comes back is all I'm saying (in addition to his look probably being changed to look like the Jared Leto version of the character).

DC spoiled this a little while ago in a preview with Superman's identity being revealed, although I agree in that its not a bad story and there is definitely room available for both Bruce and Joker to return.

ADDITIONAL SPOLIERS (which I discovered in another recent preview.)

The new bunny-ears iron man Batman is actually Gordon, and he is deployed by the police as the new Batman for Gotham due to Bruce's Batman being presumed dead.

This is canon: Jim Gordon decides to take up the mantle of Batman after this issue.

It's always fun when long self-justifying Joker monologues're answered with abrupt violence.

(Or even succinct words: " To mock you. ")

Scott Snyder has even said Bruce isn't dead and will be coming back. So I appreciate the honesty in all of this.

i believe he said that he IS dead, but that doesn't really mean much in comics and there are still more stories to be told. so yeah same difference.

After so much ORIGINAL! angry violence and MASTERFUL! pulled-out-of-the-arse plot solutions and line after line after line of CRAFTED! meaningless raving monologue...I'm afraid I myself am lost for words as to my reaction.

Better to just let Stan Pines sum it up .

I really enjoyed it as well and felt this in a way would have been a really fitting end for both Bruce and the Joker. I also was really impressed with the way Snyder was able to go from that massive spectacle of a fight to the brutal knockdown struggle between the two characters so entwined together. And I don't actually think that Joker knowing that Batman is Bruce Wayne is that much of an issue because he never cared about Bruce Wayne, only of the Batman.

The final speech about why Bruce never made himself immortal was truly touching as well. My only complaint, perhaps, is that having Gordon be the RoboBat is too clearly a temporary solution, but at the same time it is understandable that it would be too soon for Dick to give the cowl a third go, although considering how much they actually marginalized him as the Batman during his second go, it would actually be closer to the second go.

I am actually really intrigued will they have this event show up in other DC books, as the new Justice League of America proudly features Batman in the cover. I would just really like to see that mourning process of the other heroes to Bruce's passing since for whatever they pretty much skipped over it in the previous times it happened.

70 years without killing Batman once, and we couldn't go 10 more without doing it twice. Well-written issue, but a little soon after Batman RIP in my opinion

Obviously, given that they need to give themselves a way out. Bruce wasn't really dead when Morrison killed him either. Point being that this is the second time in less than a decade that Bruce Wayne as Batman has "died" and been replaced by someone else.

Well, I think that unlike many other Superhero deaths (like with Hank Pym, Vision, Peter Parker, Bruce Wayne's first death in Final Crisis, Superman, Damian Wayne, Donatello, Wasp, etc.) there is no pretense that this change is permanent or that they're dead: Scott has openly stated that Bruce is not dead, or at least that if he is, he will come back eventually (either during or after Gordon's tenure as Batman).

The final scene of Final Crisis was Bruce Wayne, alive. Brain-ghost Peter Parker showed up in like the first issue of Superior Spider-Man? The first arc at least. People might not outright say they're still alive (and frequently they are actually dead, they just get resurrected at some point in the future) but I don't think anyone really pretends anymore that it's permanent.

the difference is that this is not even bruce being dead. they are fully admitting he is alive and well and this was just an artistic choice.

My favorite part of the issue was that Joker slashed a smile onto Batman's back and used both knives as the eyes to make a smiley face. Admittedly got an amused smile out of me.

I'm getting a serious Sherlock Holmes vibe from this arc. Like the Snyder was trying the Reinchbach Falls for Batman. In a way it worked. I just wonder what if Batman Eternal "Season 2" will be the one that heralds Bruce's return?

Words simply cant do justice to this epic senses-shattering finale.

Kudos to Snyder and Capullo for providing us with one helluva ride here, playing straight and then deliciously subverting the very concepts of the Bat-God/Crazy Prepared and Joker Immunity of yore. In a few words, it delivered what it promised, an endgame.

Now, is it just moi or does some of the pencils try to emulate 80s Frank Miller? Fitting considering how similar were the "final" battles between Batsy and Mr. J here and the Dark Knight Returns.

Not alone. That's like the moral of scans_daily, innit? Here's my personal tally.

GOOD
- Joker and Bruce finally having it out.
- That fight scene, sub-section Joker finally getting what's coming to him.
- That it's over, both in the pejorative and non-pejorative sense.
- DICK-BATSSSSSSS
- Wiping Joker off the slate. At least until they revert him to DCAU factory default.

BAD
- Dick revealing himself to the family under Bruce's orders (I wish he'd have done that out of his own choice, not necessity)
- "With my friend"? He killed Jason, crippled Babs and mutilated Alfred. That better be the blood loss talking.
- That last message. Kinda on the fence about that.

NOT SURE
- Wait, Gordon? Gordon is the new Batman? But what of his moustache?

His moustache is the new Alfred.

Alfred has Gordon's shaved off mustache hair molded into a new hand. Turns out, Gordon's hair has had superpowers this whole time, and now Alfred can fly.

That sounds dumb, right up until you think about how awesome Flying Alfred would be.

Dick didn't reveal himself to the rest of the BatFam. He was alone with Joker, Bane fastballed him away from everyone and onto Mr. J's T-Rex.

"Am I the only one..." is a redundant thing to say on SD"(because it's never just you, of course).

But still...am I the only one that read Batman stopping broke-back Joker (that joke finally comes full circle) from reaching the dionesium as a half measure of saving his life? Aside from knowing that Mr. J would just come back if he let him out of his sight at the end.

And Batman didn't just break him? Crush his ribs, break his arm, anything Batman would do to any other person of Joker's skill level (literally any thug)? This looks a lot like Joker killed Batman in a fistfight.
