batman#42cover

"The idea was that we had to build Jim Gordon up in a way that would be convincing? He can’t just be Jim Gordon in a robot suit. One of the big secrets is, he’s got to step out of that suit sometime. And when he steps out, he has to look good. So, part of the fun was wondering if we could transform him physically into someone who would look formidable. Greg just did a fantastic job of making him realistically slim the way you would imagine he would be if he worked out and got into peak condition. He looks good." - Scott Snyder

So Jim Gordon is now Batman and we've seen how he has been doing in the other comics, but what about in the main book? How does his first big outing go?

We are focusing one select part of the issue and only that.

And now a quick flashback...

And there's naturally more after that and plenty of other scenes not shown. Overall, I personally loved the issue from start to finish. Even if this all returns to the status quo eventually, I'm going to enjoy the ride.

I checked out of the Snyder/Capullo Batman stuff quite a while ago, but this actually has me interested despite my cynicism towards the premise. Not enough to buy it just yet, since I'm kinda sick of Snyder's somewhat overblown epics, but provided it remains relatively small scale and light, I might just check this out.

I would definitely like to see Snyder return to the structure of something like Zero Year or particularly Black Mirror, where I think he had a pretty solid approach to an overall narrative, but managed to break what could have been one huge story down into smaller pieces.

That's a pretty slick looking Batsuit. Like something Dick Grayson should have been wearing.

It would make sense for a young, ridiculously athletic, acrobat and martial artist, and there is just no way it feels right for Jim Gordon.

So is he wearing just that slim suit from now on or does he still wear the mech?

So the Battruck is his Batcave, Robobunnyman is his Batmobile and he's Batman inside.

He's one step away from being Fortress Maximus in his Headmaster squared days.

It's not working for me. I just can't buy this being Jim Gordon.

This premise is just not working for me (if it's working for others, then joy to you of course).

For one thing, pointing out how absurd your Batmech is doesn't make it any less absurd, it's trying too hard to deflect the obvious criticisms. The look hasn't grown on me so far, and I suspect it won't, any more than AzBat's costume did.

More to the point, this story seems to be blurring a thematic line in the contrast between Batman and Gordon; Jim is the cop, Batman is the vigilante. Jim is dogged determination and belief in the rule of law, Batman is brilliance but will set the letter of the law aside for justice every single time.

Jim Gordon is a great cop, an honest cop and a great detective, but all this? Just feels like he's "trespassing". Move your hero outside their comfort zone sure, but not into something so diametrically opposed to what they have always stood for. They've had to change him so much to make him Batman, what was the point of making it Jim Gordon?

Plus I know this is temporary and all, but bearing in mind DC's mad rush to insist that all their heroes are young, why is Batman being being played by someone who is the father of a woman in her early 20's?

I prefer gritty, street-level Gordon too, but I actually don't mind him being Batman: the Bat-books actually have done pretty good pushing the needle for their characters. See Hip!Batgirl, Hero!Harley, Spy!Nightwing...

It's mostly the Bat-armor that's really dogging me about all this. It's so...clunky.

Indeed, the silent shadow of Batman slipping through the night now goes "Clank Clank Clank"

There's a famous scene in Dorctor Who where the 4th Doctor orders K9 to sneak up behind someone, which is sort of spoiled by the fact that K9's drive unti was INCREDIBLY noisy on most surfaces, you could probably have heard him sneaking up on you from two streets away.

You know, I'd like to see a story where Gordon tries to step into the role of Batman, but ends up struggling with the fact that being Batman means bending or outright breaking rules that he's spent his entire career upholding. Could Gordon interrogate a thug by dangling him off a building or by threatening to pummel them senseless? Would he be able to break into a suspect's home to search for clues without thinking how incredibly illegal it is? I'd love to see something....but something tells that's not what we're going to be getting.

Also, if they don't have at least one instance of Gordon trying and failing to do the "Sneak Up On Someone Without Them Noticing" trick that Batman used to do to him, I will be severely disappointed.

I actually like this very much; we know it's temporary. But Jim Gordon as RoboBunnyCop makes for a nice change of pace. It's much less forced than say, Azrael filling in for Bruce Wayne, and we know Jim is not going to go crazy with power or anything. Haven't been wild about the Superman/Batman appearances, but then, my distaste for the "new" Superman is probably coloring that. But whereas I think the new Superman is an unmitigated disaster, I can enjoy Jim as RoboBunnyCop.

For a while.

You know what would've been great? Julia Pennyworth as Batman.

Look at that armor: it's the most androgynous Batsuit we've had since 2011. She could pull off a Samus in that thing:

- Ex-SAS credentials (I think. She was some kind of operative, I I remember right)
- Strong Bat-Family connection
- A new reason for Alfred to stop moping and re-butler himself

Hell, old man Pennyworth I would have liked to see wear the Bat-duds. God knows he's got some issues to work out now that Bruce is MIA. Again.

Like others have said, the suit outside the armor looks pretty cool, but it just isn't Gordon. Except maybe the gun holster, but even then, it bugs me that it's hanging all slanted like that. He's a cop, not a cowboy!

I like the little nods to the other Batman costumes with those colour schemes, although I'm not sure why Snyder and Capullo saw fit to brand their own Zero Year design (a pretty decent update of Batman's first costume) as the apparent bottom of the barrel.

It is vaguely reminiscent of Azrael's own variation from way back when, in the cold blue robotics of it all. I really doubt he's going to forge his own independent identity when this all gets undone, though.

The black one actually. The bat symbol looks like a character who's slated to finally hit Bat Books again.. SOON.

I was at first thinking "Wait what?", but then I remembered the vaguely Nazi-ish sounding threequel coming from Miller & Azzarello.

If that weren't the case, though, I would not be surprised to see DC importing Miller Batman into their main comics line to match Marvel's Old Man Logan.
