Has she suddenly become a whole lot younger? I get the impression she's supposed to be about my age (22), whereas before I thought of her as about 30, after all, I thought she was about the same age as Renee, who was a police offier for ages, and so has to be at least 30. Oh DC, she's BatWOMAN.

On the other hand, this was so beautiful.

I think it is more to do with how Williams is depicting her, myself. It is totally different to prior portrayals, but then, I wouldn't say her style and look is totally off for someone pushing thirty.

But yeah, I totally agree. Rucka's struck gold here with the two features of this book, and two totally fantastic artists backing him up for Kate and Renee.

The thing with her dad is especially jarring. I don't think that *this* is a bad character, and I'd be pretty interested right now if she were new, but trying to reconcile "this character bears no resemblance whatsoever to any prior existing Batwoman" and "this character is the one who got stabbed through the heart by the Crime Bible lunatics" kicks me out of the story.

I'm on board so far, but I'm not as stoked as I should be.

I hate Kate's over-the-top Goth colouring. She looks about as attractive as the Joker.

This could be an awesome read and I still won't be able to pick it up because the BRIGHT FLAMING RED on white is giving me the beginnings of a migraine. I'm not kidding.

Motto. Considering how bizarre and unattractive she looks just next to her white dad and girlfriend, I bet she and Renee just make a fantastic-looking couple now. -_-

Very neat, love Rucka's writing, and the art is gorgeous. For them ost part it is coloured really well, but I cannot stand Kate's skin, what's up with it? I was really looking forward to the stylised colours of the book and then suddenly everyone else has normal skin except her?

Oh well, it'll still be wonderful.

I have only one complain, because otherwise I love everything: SPORTS BRA, CAN KATE HAS IT. Seriously, fighting crime is going to be painful without it.

On the other hand: I want to hold the art close to my heart (even Kate's colouring, on a purely visual-metatextual level, is cool imo -- and definitely fits Williams' art nouveau-ish style, yay), and Rucka did make me kind of interested, as opposed to liking Kate just to be spiteful.

She has a functional relationship with her father, apparently! Even if the military overtones are alarming, they HUG. And quote Pythons. Bwee. I only hope Kate's motivation for fighting crime go more along the lines of Batgirl!Babs' than some angsfest of trauma and woe.

Weirdly enough, when she takes off her costume that first time, we see she's actually wearing a sports bra. Which makes the points really weird.

Haha, that reminds of a common complaint I heard when Kate's new look was first unveiled. Basically, tattoos on comic characters are a bad idea because artists are going to be inconsistent over the years. You know it's bad when the artist who actually gave her the tats can't even get it right.

Been waiting for this for a long time. I am surprised it is this good. I had hoped, but you know with DC you can't ever get your hopes up.

Not totally in love with the white skin and bob haircut but the artwork is amazing. And Rucka is so good. I got such a sense of her character in just these first pages.

So excited for the next issue.

*weird look* wait That's Batwoman? O_o has she always looked like a goth punk girl? How old is she? Wow, she now looks younger than Babs. And that first scene totally threw me off. I thought it was a mom and daughter meeting. Lol, yeah, this is nothing like what I expected. Feels like a completely new character. gonna take me a while to assimilate this. How does this work in the grand scope of things...hrm.

"O_o has she always looked like a goth punk girl?"

I don't think so.

Her initial appearances in 52 (haven't bothered to catch up with the whole thing, but I got through the first trade or so) had her as a socialite whose tastes ran to high fashion -- or at least slinky, floor-length gowns.

Assuming I'm remembering correctly.

I know everyone else has already said this, but I do not like Kate's skin color. Pale skin I don't have a problem with, but this is Joker or vampire territory here - the printed page is just not a subtle enough visual medium to convey 'pale' without making it 'white as a sheet of paper'.
I like her costume, though. Also, nice bike.
