Vertigo is to me what Image Comic seems to be others. While everyone gets excited over whatever Image puts out, Vertigo does that for me. It's produced some my favorite comics of all time (Fables, iZombie, Scalped, Saucer Country, and The Unwritten), but it has been falling on hard times recently. This imprint barely had any new titles at all!

...that is, until just recently...

From October to December, there will be four brand new Vertigo comic ever month. Here's what to look forward to!

OCTOBER:

Twilight Children

No information about what the titles will be, but I like a lot of these creative teams being shown here. More information here and also here.

They seem to be really giving Vertigo a new push with these titles and creatives, which is awesome as Vertigo had given us... Wait, there's going to be a new Lucifer title? How? Why?

Apparently it's by the author of the YA series "The Spiderwick Chronicles", which I haven't read but I've heard is quite good. So, cautious optimism.

Huh. Wonder if it's going to be a sequel to the Mike Carey series with Lucifer returning to Creation after some time in self-imposed exile, or if it will pretend that series never happened.

AmVamp's the only Vertigo title I'm following right now. Recommendations?

Honestly with Vertigo's history, it had a lot of complaints about the books not selling enough (DC comics has an higher overhead then your Image book). It felt like DC just decided to pair it back after it's flagship titles ended and Karen Berger left. Part of me thinks they're putting more now into it to compete with Image comics. Either way readers win I suppose.

Holly Black is a pretty good YA fantasy author, so it might be interesting to see her do Lucifer. She has a good fascination with fantasy and worldbuilding, don't think I've read anything from her that wasn't from a teenage protagonist though.

New Romancer looks very unlike Pete Milligan (just judging from the cover). And the pairing of Cooke and Gilbert Herndandez is pretty inspired, like the UPA animation style cover.

Not sure how I feel about a new Vertigo Lucifer series. Mike Carey's narrative ended on a satisfying, reasonably burn-your-bridges note, so picking up from that continuity would be hard to do without being contrived.

And if it's going to be a tie-in with the upcoming Fox TV series, I really hope it's not meant to be in the same continuity. Given that the premise of the show is Lucifer feeling compassion, and the impulse to do good, for the first time in his long life, and that it seems to have borrowed his characterization from Matt Ryan as Constantine, the show is basically Lucifer in name only. But if the new Vertigo title is meant to be a from-scratch thing, without ties to either Carey's work or the TV show, I'd be willing to give it a chance.
