As you are most likely aware, Yvonne Craig, the actress who originated the roles of Barbara Gordon and Batgirl in the 1966 Batman TV series, passed away last week after a fight with cancer.

In light of this sad milestone, it would seem apt for scans_daily to join other fans around the world in mourning her loss, but also to celebrate the character she breathed life into, and set the standard for for decades to come.

Ms Craig had over 150 TV credits to her name, but she will perhaps be best remembered for two classic sci-fi/fantasy roles; Marta, the delusional, and tragic, Orion in the classic Trek episode "Whom Gods Destroy" and, of course, Barbara Gordon aka Batgirl.

Here are parts of the short promo used to "sell" the character to the network, featuring a one time appearance by Killer Moth.

(I have to say I love the costume transformation, which was also reflected in the comic book version too.)

A trained dancer, Ms Craig added a level of grace and high-kicking style to her fight scenes which, in all fairness to Messr's West, Ward and their stuntmen, was perhaps not the show's usual strong suit. The fact she was also a librarian allowed for both her to be seen instantly by the audience as someone who was very smart, and also to play with the stereotype of the "mousy librarian" as her secret identity.

The impact she had in creating the role of Batgirl in the public consciousness cannot be understated. More than a few creators have acknowledged just how much it meant to see a costumed superheroine on TV, at a time when such things were pretty much unheard of. Gail Simone's comments on Tumblr were particularly evocative.

Her Batgirl even rode a personalised motorcycle, even if we have to admit that it is perhaps the only crimefighting motorvehicle with actual lace trim.

But we come to praise Ms Craig's contribution to the genre and the character she is best known for portraying.

So please, this week, post (or repost) your favorite Barbara Gordon Batgirl stories, Oracle would be fine too of course, but we have a lot of Oracle around already, let's pull out the oldies and reprints and post the ones that mean the most to you. There's a new tag made specially for this occasion, let's make it a one worthy of the original Dominoed Daredoll!
