The MySpace based freebie Dark Horse Presents has a short Buffy the Vampire Slayer story up, written by Joss Whedon and with art by the wonderful Jo Chen.

And it's full of crack. And slash.

I'm not sure this counts as particularly slashy or crowd pleasing since absolutely nothing happens on panel. It's weird that the real James Marsters is quite happy to play tonsil hockey with another bloke in Torchwood, but they felt the need to make his comic likeness fool around off screen, so to speak.

There's a very similar scene in Whedon's Runaways arc. Karolina leans in to kiss Xavin and it awkwardly cuts to other character's reaction. Which was...more than a little frustrating, since they could show Victor cheating on his girlfriend by kissing Lillie on panel, but bleh, I'm cranky today. Look, pretty Jo Chen art!

Funnier, sure. But that's the trouble with Whedon. While he's able to treat female sexuality semi-seriously, the only way he's ever dealt with male homosexuality is as a joke or for comic effect (Xander, kinda gay, ho ho, Larry the jock's a homo, lol, Andrew and Jonathan, tee hee etc) unless there's a gay character played straight (so to speak) in Firefly?

I didn't think Larry's sexuality was treated as the joke so much as Xander's reaction to it was.

That's a fair point, though. Aside from that, I don't conveniently recall any male character in any of the Whedon series I've watched that's just there and gay and that's it.

Nope, no male gay characters in Firefly. IIRC, the only time homosexuality or bisexuality is dealt with is when the female prostitute character takes on a female client (and there's a joke about the Big Manly Man character using the mental image as masturbation fodder).

Actually, I did remember Lorne in Angel, but I'm not even sure if he IS gay, since he never seemed to have a relationship with anyone, that I recall. And again, he was often played for campy laughs.

In the unaired episode "Heart of Gold", when Mal refuses her first offer the Madame of the prostitute house mentions she's got boy prostitutes in case he's gay. I believe they use the word "sly" as slang for it.

Jonathan was always depicted as 100% straight IIRC, his fantasy in Superstar involved attractive women amongst other things. Agreed though, not a lot of straightforward gay guys in the Whedonverse, except for Larry, whose being gay wasn't played for laughs but whose self denial was, once he was out, he seemed fine.

James Marsters makes out with a guy on Torchwood? *researches the series* Damn, that sounds like a good show, regardless of the sexiness that is James Marsters. And it seems to be on DVD. Must see if the public library near my college has copies for me to borrow mixed in with the Smallville and Sex in the City DVDs this fall.

Er... I was talking about Andrew and Jonathan as a collective, which was basically presented as "Andrew is gay for Warren, but he's dead so now he has lots of awkward chortlesome moments with sharing a bed with Jonathan etc lol" more than Jonathan being gay himself.
