Obvious answer is obvious. Fanservice of this kind is much rarer than the endless parade of nearly nekkid wimmins in comics, as well as the endless sexual harassment that women face in the rest of their lives. The cries of misogyny come from tired frustration, especially at the usually poor representations of women's sexuality shown.

A modicum of sexploitation of a man is not a balancing of the scales that requires the intervention of men's rights activists to ensure men don't feel abused. Every other place is that place. This is the feminine space, regardless of the current percentage of menfolk making up our membership.

False equivalence between fanservice of any kind and real life sexual harassment, much less any other form of sex crime which also tends to get bandied about, is a hyperbolic accusation that only serves to lend a veneer of moral credibility for an already existing prejudice.

Moreover, we don't need "rights advocates" for either gender ensuring prudish people don't "feel abused" by innocent depictions of sexuality. Because it's a false claim that there is any demonstrable harm, and a publisher's right to free speech trumps people's "right" to not be offended by media.

Of course, your own free speech allows you to criticize and express your opinion on the published work, and I defend that. But when I disagree with you as vehemently as I do, I'm certainly going to use my own free speech to make my counterpoint.

In a pluralistic society, with many different social values among different people, it's absolutely necessary to develop a degree of tolerance for things that are not to your tastes. I am repulsed by men, and thus find this picture a little bit squicky. Did I complain about it? Absolutely not. It's not to my taste, which means I'm not the target audience for it. I can turn the page, or change the channel, or click the back button to avoid things that I find distasteful. I do that every time someone posts gay male porn here, which personally squicks me out. I don't bitch about it, because I don't have any business trying to enforce my tastes on everyone else and spoiling their enjoyment. I just leave those postings alone. Nobody's forcing me to click them open, after all.

I wish others would display more of that kind of tolerance.

We could all use more tolerance. But this isn't some street corner--you already know its original purpose was to be a safe space for women to look at male gay porn. While it expanded to be a place for other forms of sexuality and general comics as well, every other thing is, frankly, an optional add-on. We voted to allow the other stuff. We might vote again to compartmentalize. I wasn't trying to target you for persecution, but I thought I'd tag the end of the thread with the explanation that I've heard given. That's pretty much all I can say on the subject.

I heard that. Remember when a woman in skin-tight clothing was sexy? Now we have the Witchblade look on Star Sapphire, perma-hard nipples, etc. It all reminds me of really bad porn stars who've had so much body work done they look like they have mannequin parts.

No doubt, I am simply a true comic book fan, always finding something to complain about!

Though I do feel kind of funny saying this when I got two of those exceptions in my pulls last week, but I think a lot of that could be affection toward the artists (since how respectfully and how accurately an artist portrays women has a huge effect on my enjoyment of a book) and the characters depicted (i think Jeannette is the best thing to happen to the Six and Soranik is fighting Kyle pretty hard for my second favorite GL behind Guy). Celebrate a good thing when it happens, I s'pose.

You're mistaken that I knew that already --I'm pretty new to the game here, and this is the first tie I've had that history related to me. I was under the impression that it's purpose was a discussion zone for comics, to spread the love for favorite stories and creators. I didn't know anything about it's origins beyond that. I don't object to it in any way, but I didn't know it before today. I appreciate the background. :)

Yep, because it more often than not IS the heroine showing skin, not the men. This (Namor's scene) is a rarity, and a slight cause for some hope that mainstream comics might actually be getting more aware of their gender-bias and doing something about it.
