Ordinarily, I'd be right with you guys with the gore, the death, etc. However:

1) Johns brought him into this world, he can take him back, too.
2) Speaking of which, they'll be back. By next issue. :p Besides, the characters have the reincarnation gimmick, now. They get a "get out of Heaven" free card, similar to Phoenix, thanks to said gimmick.
3) Their power levels rise via DEATH? Oh, sh--!!
4) I actually like the motivation of the bad guys: they're hunting all the people that have come back to life. And boy, there've been a number of them.
5) His nose. Jesus christ, what's up with Ralph's nose. That's...that's NOT twitching. And I'm scared.

I know! i turned the page and jumped out of my skin then got really facinated by reis' art of him. In every panel he is holding Sue, I wonder if that lingering emotional attatchment will lead to their downfall.

I'm more upset about the fact that we've seen Ralph and Sue as ghosts already, and even that I'm willing to hold off on judging because it's only been one issue. We have no idea about the mechanisms behind the Black Lanterns yet, really.

Other than that, like people have said, rebirth has become the whole point of Hawkman and Hawkgirl. In that respect, having them be the big death at the end of issue one is a lot more powerful than just some meaningless death (coughUltimatumcough) and is pretty compelling.

I just had a thought. Each ring seems to share a power source. Because two Black Lanterns kill two people and instead of each one going up to .01% they both reach .02%.

I bet when they reach 100% the Black Lantern comes to life. And who knows maybe whoever puts on his ring will come back to life.

I think that all of it is being used to ubercharge something really big, like each time one of the BL's kill someone the power goes up by .01 percent, and when it reaches 100 (Which will take millions of deaths BTW), then it will allow the big bad (who I am STILL banking on being Nekron) to do...whatever the hell they intend to do.

Also like to note that the dibny zombies took care of the hawks souls when they crushed the hearts. look at the funky white light on the hearts dust

So, I'm guessing that Johns is ignoring his own canon that Nth metal affords the Hawks some protection from impalings? Carter lost multiple limbs and was practically torn to pieces by Manhawks and was up and walking around a few days later. Although getting your heart torn out really will put a crimp in your day. Particularly when your writer crassly sets it up that you're about to admit your undying devotion and have a reunion and then both get eviscerated by a couple who, when alive, was my one of my favorite DC OTPs. Why the hate-on for romance, DC? Wrrrry?

Screw you, DC. Kendra already got impaled as a sucky plot device a few years ago. And double screw you for making the Black Lantern Dibnys such assholes. So, Death IS an emotion, clearly, and that emotion is Eternal Sadism and Douchebaggery.

I like this ending better, it gives these lives closure better than final crisis and it spares other characters that don't have a resurrection clause. I think as far as DC Editorial was concerned, the hawks were dead this just made them deader
