From Blackest Night: Tales of the Corps #1. Make of this what you will.

Last page removed at someone's request. Sinestro guy threatens her, his energy goes into her staff.
I should also mention they let the Sinestro Corps guy get away. They use fear to drive him off.
So how do you interpret this?

I'm going to assume this is down to the fact we don't have the whole story, but I interpret this as being really rather unclear storytelling. Did the Indigo person force the Green Lantern energy to mercy-kill it's own wearer?

Date: 2009-07-17 07:22 am (UTC)
From: (Anonymous)
Given the general struggling, kicking, and arm-grasping, I'd be fine calling that a regular old kill, rather than the merciful variety.

I don't think it ever bothered me before how nonchalant the rings seem about the death of their wearers, but this whole excerpt sort of gives me the creeps.

A mercy-killing equals compassion to some degree, right? If he's that badly messed up and on the brink of death, better to put him out of his misery rather than let him suffer more.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and assume that the Indigo Lanterns are able to absorb/redirect the energy of other Lanterns.

Also, you'd think that an instrument as advanced as the Green Lantern ring would at least be able to discern basic phonological and syntactical structures from that sample, given how it can instantly translate every other language in the universe.

Klak nok indeed.

Presumably this means that their mindset is supposed to be impossibly alien. Which means that though they feel as much compassion as anyone, the way they express it is through...well, smotherin' dudes, I guess.

Unless the langage is either A) too complex (modifying itself in terms of group dynamics and situations) B) not a langauge as we would undserstand it at all, but a phonetic side effect of a telepathic communication or C) Something consciously blocked from the GLC by the Indigo's.

Makes senst they can redirect, given that the Orange Lantern -their opposite on the colour scale- can apparently suck up other Lanterns power & keep it for himself.

The way it's presented here, it could be that the ring is able to translate every language in the universe . . . because it has access to a database, and the Indigo Tribe's language isn't in it. Which would be stupid.

4chan's /co/ board had an interesting theory: The Indigo Tribe is from another universe entirely, and have moved here in search of refuge. The specific theory is they're the Antimatter Universe's version of the demons of the main universe's space sector 666.

A different theory - she was trying to aid the Lantern, but, being unable to understand her, he fought it, and his struggles prevented her from properly healing him.

(I've been in the hospital a LOT, and, even knowing what's going on, I've been in such blind panic that several nurses have had to hold me down to keep me from hurting myself, several times. Now imagine if some strange person was taking YOUR power and doing something to you that you don't know what it is.)

However, on the unsettling side, this story, combined with some stuff said about them in interviews, suggests the Indigos are like the Reds, in that joining their ranks involves allowing your identity to be subsumed completely by the Indigo Tribe and its mission - notice none are given names, they speak a language not in the GL rings' database, etc...

just based on the images alone, i am going to assume it's compassion, but not for the ring-bearer. but for the ring and the ring's function itself.

If the ring can't fulfill it's true function, then the ring is turned on it's owner. What if it's the other way around this time. In all previous corps, the lantern rings serve the wearer. In this case, maybe the wearers serve the lantern, like a primitive society would.

Yeah, I was thinking that is the tribes theme; they turn the rings power against its owner.

Well, now we have a full dossier on what all the rings can do.

Best part of Tales of the Corps #1? Except for this story which is the first true appearance of the Indigo corps, the stories therin are self contained and add flavor to the main Blackest Night without requiring that you buy this book to understand it.

That's how you right a freaking tie-in! Hate hate hate *waves red ring* "required" tie-ins (I'm looking at you, Final/Infinate Crisis).

The emotion of Compassion.

I think she gave him the OK to die instead of his will forcing him to fight on to a more painful death.
She also gave the Yellow a taste of his own medicine. Compassion would not kill unless the target wanted to go, or it was needed for the target to find peace.

Maybe if 'compassion' equals 'empathy' and 'empathy' equals 'taking other people's emotions for yourself', and if you burn your dictionary, it kinda makes sense?

Or Johns is going for a more 'compassion is pity, and pity smothers (literally)' approach. I have no idea, but I'm entertained.

more like compassion equals a desire to end pain and prevent the causes of pain in my opinion.

Though I still HATE how sexualized Indigo looks, she looks less bitchy than the promotional art/toys we've seen so far. She could use more clothing, but her eyes almost look... compassionate... in the first few panels.

... And then she proceeds with the crazy. I'm not sure I understand.

I'm not sure what to make of her outfit, I get that they're trying to make it tribal which makes sense but at the same time it's pretty sexualized. I suppose it at least balances out that the males are similarly unclothed.

Maybe it's a Othar Tryggvassen situation. This war is going to hurt the universe in a big way, so the quickest and therefore most merciful way to end it would be all the Ring-Bearers die. She uses the GL's ring against him because they don't have any attack powers of their own, but they can have a ring attack it's bearer with physical contact. The flip-side is that most direct attack with other Rings won't work on them either.
