Entry tags:char: she hulk/jennifer walters, publisher: marvel comics, title: heroes for hire
Inspired by [insanejournal.com profile] gargoylekitty's recent post, a page and a half from issue #14 of the first volume of HEROES FOR HIRE.

For the most part I'm not a fan of Ostrander's Shulkie on this title, but this scene always has me giggling like a loon. The best part is it actually even works - there's virtually no narration past this issue beyond simple setting placards. Jennifer Walters: not to be messed with, regardless of which side of the fourth wall you hail from.

kingrockwell: cool times; a man in a black shirt places a blue fedora on his head while throwing a jacket over his shoulder. (Lex Luthor)

I LIKED the tiara! It's distinctive - nobody else in comics has (or should I say, HAD) one like it - you saw him wearing that thing, you were like 'yeah, that's Luke Cage'. Nowadays, he just dresses like a regular guy, which annoys me.

Elsewhere in the series, he gives Brother Voodoo shit about the way he dresses being an embarrassment, and Drumm is like, "This from a guy with a fender on his head?"

Was Luke wearing the open-front yellow shirt? (Need to upload my Thor!Luke icon, where ever I put it.)

Apparently this is his transitional look, normal clothes, still rocking the tiara.

Some dialogue that just came up while playing "Spider-Man: Web of Shadows":

Spider-Man: Why does everybody talk crap about my costume? It's classis! It's iconic!
Luke Cage: I was unaware one of the definitions of iconic was "ugly as hell."
Spider-Man: This coming from the man that used to run around in a yellow puffy shirt, with a little silver tiara in his afro.
Luke Cage: Man dressed like you are right now don't get to talk about how I USED to dress.
Spider-Man: Still. You wore a tiara.
Luke Cage: It was a head band. A head... band.

It was a silk shirt, not a puffy shirt. That makes it all right. Doesn't it?

Man, it would have ROCKED if Shulkie could have kept her fourth wall-breaking powers. Even more so if, like here, she was the only person who was even aware of the fourth wall. Like, on page 3 the heroes are about to go storm the bad guys' hideout, who have a bunch of ninjas as backup, and someone says 'man, I wish I knew just how many of those damn ninjas they've got'. Shulkie could say 'wait, I'll go see!', and while they're all saying that that's impossible, she can't break into the hideout all by herself, she'd never make it, etc., she could sneak ahead to page 7, where the main villain is giving a speech to his lackies, do a quick headcount, then head back to page 5, where they're still wondering where she's gotten to, and say '15'. It'd be COOL.
