Here's one more belated Halloween story, this one from EC comics. I personally think it's Graham Ingels' best work for the publisher in terms of detail and just the sheer horror it conveys. Also if you're a fan of these EC excerpts I recommend you check out Fantagraphics' 'EC Comics Library' collection at Comixology (they're also available in print form).

This was originally published in Haunt of Fear #17.

The story opens with a young man getting lost by an old plantation house near the bayous. He goes there to ask for directions when an older man named Sidney lets him in. Sidney, it turns out, switched the signs so the man, Mr. Forman, would arrive at this place. Forman asks why, and Sidney tells him it's because his brother is a homicidal maniac.

We see via flashbacks that Sidney has killed and dismembered two other people, a woman and a salesman.

EC certainly was one for the exposition. Like, every panel.

I think it's because they expected their kid readers to be able to read it. Textbooks were written at grade level. Newspapers were packed with text, too. People just expected back then that there would be words with pictures. :)

I like Everett's final understated "*choke*". He's like, "OK, I'm good with murdering and dismembering people, but I do find this a little disconcerting."

I've seen "How's Bayou" in various humor comics. I thought it was a reference to Walt Kelly's Pogo, for some reason.
