As per All-Star Batman (not to be confused with All-Star Batman and Robin)...

Background...while attempting to bring Harvey Dent cross country, Bruce tells Duke (his new partner, who, as of yet, doesn't have a codename) how he met Harvey, and as a result, the origin of the coin.

(I pause, here...Numbers? Really? Arkham family, you are bad at mental health. I understand the point, but a standard dehumanization technique? Really?)

Two-Face (who they'd thought unconscious) tells Duke that Bruce hadn't told the whole story. Eventually Duke manages to get Bruce to finish the story.

This all goes back to the main theme of the arc (and, to a lesser extent, to the backup), which resembles The Killing Joke, in a way, discussing the inherent goodness or lack thereof of humans, and what it takes to go bad.

All-Star Batman is a much better book than the title it chose, or how the first issue ended, would suggest.

1 page from issue 3, approximately 2 from issue 4.

The "numbers as names" bit weirds me out, too.

We're talking about an Arkham mental health facility built on 'Innsmouth'. I'm surprised we didn't get a issue of kid Bats and Twoface fighting deep ones.

Although to be fair, I almost imagine that Lovecraftian monsters would try to rise up in Gotham, look around to understand where they were and then just slink away uttering 'We're good. Not much to do here.

Or they'd take one look inside the Joker's mind, say "NOPE NOT TOUCHING THAT," and slink away.

The Elseworlds 80-Page Giant (of Letitia Lerner, Superman's Babysitter note) had a story that was adult two-fisted cops Bruce and Harvey versus crawling chaoses.

(The stinger with Eel O'Brian is just nice.)

Ha, yes, a double-take there at the location. Though it might explain a lot of things. :)

And even Snyder and Romita couldn't keep them straight...Bruce and Harvey's swapped between the two issues.

I was getting a little confused as to who was who, there.

But...yeah...it's a miracle either of them came out even as healthy as they are, given this treatment.

I think the Arkhams were always destined to end up with a notorious Asylum. *sigh*

I don't know if this is a recent concept or not, but can I just say how much I love this dynamic between Batman and Two-Face? Both knowing each other's secret identity, Harvy and Bruce being childhood friends, there's just so much potential here, and I'm glad to see it being explored.

Whenever I see Harvey/Bruce stories, I can't help but take it as evidence supporting my headcanon that Bruce and Harvey were lovers pre-accident. I've always thought that out of all the men in Bruce's life, Harvey makes the most sense as a love interest (maaaybe outside of Clark) turned tragic that doesn't involve fridging.

"He wasn't seeing the world as it was, but how he would make it."

I like that - it's the kind of statement that's got both hopeful and foreboding resonance. This exploration of their friendship's neat, too, although I do have to call out how extreme this Bruce is.
