The ray simply reflected back onto Lu Thoria without Supermaid even noticing. Meanwhile in the present, Braniac shows up to capture Kandor. Supermaid manages to defeat him and imprison him in the Phantom Zone, but her childhood friend Len Landor, part of the defense force, was hurt in the attack and hospitalized. While there, Kal-El admits to Len that he fantasizes what it would be like if Krypton had been destroyed and he was the Superman on Earth.

While the blast gives Kal temporary limited powers, he's unable to catch Lu Thoria and Supermaid has to save him when the powers wear off. Trying to keep her away from the danger of Earthite, he pretends to still have them and tells her he doesn't need a girl to help him. She thinks that he's jealous of her, "like all males", and flies off to get Jor-El's help. Kal finds Lu Thoria, but is unable to stop her from shooting an Earthite meteor at the approaching Supermaid. Supermaid, however, is somehow unaffected and catches Lu Thoria.

That is some epic level superdickery there.

I don't which was more striking: The fact that Kal-El fantasizes about the destruction of his whole world just to get superpowers or after he literally, even if accidentally, steals Lois's powers, he just starts dismissing her complaints as 'petty feminine jealousy.'

This is... I don't even have the words for this.

All things considered, that hadn't been too bad up until the last page.
Sweet f**k, that last page.
That was just crap.
Dammit, Silver Age. Could you not be you, just once?!
"Foolish reader, you thought this was going to feature female empowerment. Well, that's where you're wrong!"

Why Lu Thoria (oy...) so set on Kal-El?
Or is that just because no matter the time, no matter the place, every woman's priority in the Silver Age is getting into Kal-El's pants.

... also, why are the children talking like that? Had the people who wrote this... thing never seen an actual child?

... and Kryptonville?
For all they are clever clogs, them Kryptonians aren't half unimaginative when it comes to naming things.

Or like stereotypical cavepeople. It really is annoying to read.

Me agree. Me find very irritating.

I also only remember that happening with DC for some reason, such as stories with young Clark as Superbaby. I don't recall, say, Franklin Richards ever having that problem.

It also seemed to only really affect the Superman-related titles; perhaps it was the editor's style preference?

Reminds me of the Dinobots, which I suppose is sort of in keeping with cave people.

Goddamn, that out of nowhere superdickery ending. Sorry, Lois, you don't get to keep your powers, not even in an imaginary story. What a load of shit.

In fairness, the bit where Lois baselessly accuses him of jealousy of her super-powers sort of sets up the punchline. But yeah, it's pretty freakin' terrible. There's also no reason to make the Red Kryptonite-that-isn't a permanent thing, except specifically to dick Lois over.

I also don't even know what to make of the fact that in the middle of the story, while Kal is pining for the life on Earth that can never be... he dreams of having Lois in love with him but of, let's say, "playing hard to get" with her.

"What if EARTH blew up instead of KRYPTON? Wouldn't we all be dead, since Earth doesn't have Krypton-like technology? No, Lois Lane's parents, who have shown no aptitude for rocket science in our time, would arbitrarily become super-geniuses and send her, but only her, to Krypton, where she'd be squashed like a bug by the higher gravity and cooked by the red sun... wait, no, we mean she'd have Superman-like super-powers because genius parents, and she'll be raised by a Kryptonian version of the Kents instead of literally any distinct characters because why not, and she'll have a secret identity for no discernible reason except that's how we've always done it, and Earth fragments will work just like Kryptonite does on her even though her powers come from a completely different source, and we'll use SILVER to block them instead of lead and they'll be a different color because that makes it original, and and and and and..."

Oh, of course, and "if Superman weren't Superman, then Superman would have to become Superman because in the end, Superman is Superman."

At least Kal-El's career in medicine is pretty original and logical. The rationales that got him into journalism don't apply here, so he's channeling that fundamental drive to help people and save lives in another direction.

The narrative is predicated on a " wacky reversal " punchline, and then the ending is a " wacky reversal " punchline.

Mildly frustrating " oy.. " imaginary story headaches for everyone!

Well, at least now there can be no doubt why Superman was chosen to have his own brand of cheese.
