"Like best actor and best actress. Why are they separate?"

Probably to prevent all the wank surrounding gender politics that it would inevitably cause if there was only one award for both genders.

I'd like to think it is because men and women play different roles with different demands on the performances they make and that it is always good to hand out more awards but it really does seem weird that we separate them. Almost like if we had a male president for men and female president for women. Just strange.

Well, no, because Best Act[or|ress] doesn't actually have any responsibilities/powers attached to h[im|er].

But I agree with you otherwise: it does seem weird that we separate them. And it's going to look even weirder to our grandchildren.

IIRC The Guardian newspaper deliberately stopped that distinction some years ago, "actor" is used as a gender neutral term in their articles.

Maybe in a perfectly equal world, I'd agree. But honestly, given the general gender inequality that still exists, separating them guarantees that women will get equal representation for their craft. Given that there was a time when women weren't even allowed to portray women on stage, I'd say it's better we buck that power dynamic still. I don't really think that having 20 candidates at the Oscars as opposed to 10 is necessarily that much better, especially given how women still generally have to fight for the same kind of roles and representation as women do. I get the intent of the statement, I just think there are legitimate reasons for having two categories.

It's not original to Bendis, it's explaining a cover from a few years ago.
