....wha? What just happened at the end? Also, Wasp's butt, because that's what this final page needs even more of!

IIRC, Ultron took over Iron Man's armor and reshaped it to look like Jan because mommy issues.

Ultron took over Tony's body and turned him into a woman.
Because... dunno. Maybe Ultron wanted to see what it's like.

Or maybe someone really needed some fresh air they weren't getting.

Boy, all that stuff with Mole Man sure amounted to absolutely jack-all.

All things considered, this team is astoundingly bland.
I don't know if it's the uniformity of their costumes, their lack of personalities, or the fact that everyone's white...

Also, the Cho art. Just... the Cho art.

Wait, you're saying that a team designed only to be strong isn't interesting?

That's...super obvious. Not surprised Bendis missed it, but still.

The team has Carol Danvers, Wasp and Black Widow.
In the hands of a competent writer, all three of them should have enough basic charisma to sustain a team book for a handful of issues, even with the massive drag factors of Mid-00s Iron Man, Sentry and Wonder Man.
(Whoop, almost wrote "Wonder Woman" there...)

It's just that as written by Bendis, all the characters are almost completely without personality, and what personality they do seem to have is unpleasant.
Add to that the extremely limited colouring going on (Ms. Marvel - Black and yellow, Wasp - Black and yellow, Black Widow - Black, Sentry - Yellow and blue, Ares - Mostly black, Iron Man - Red and gold, Wonder Man - Red, later Red and BLACK)...
They're visually boring to look at, even without the ceaseless effort Cho puts into putting their asses into every page.

Just wait 'till Hank Pym shows up.

One of the things I hate most from Bendis's era of the Avengers is the idea that the team "needs" a Wolverine-type, someone who won't hesitate to make th hard call, the kill call.

To me, that's the last thing the Avengers need (or most teams for that matter). When did teams and heroes finding a third option become passé?

When WATCHMEN and DARK KNIGHT RETURNS became popular, mixed with "Wolverine on the team gets us more readers because Market Oversaturation isn't a thing."

Yeah, that would have been the start of it. And around the time they added Logan to the New Avengers was when it really hit the big time.

And yet, it was a popular enough decision that it is a standard now to have an anti-hero on the team.

My favorite variation upon that was in Matt Fraction's short-lived series, The Order, where the would-be badass longer member of the team was, by far, the least effective.

So instead of approaching Ares in a polite manner at home or after work, they show up at his job, blow his civilian identity, and threaten to arrest or deport him if he doesn't sign up. Kinda dickish there, eh? There have got to be better ways to handle this.

And how does Tony survive being "morphed" from Iron Man into Ultron Jan? Physics and biology, pfffft. It's been ages, I don't care to remember how this was resolved.

On the one hand, agreed... on the other hand, it *is* Ares who does actually respect bluster and stuff.

Ares probably doesn't have a work visa, which is why Tony said that he would deport him to Olympus.

That really seemed to vary from book to book. Some of the books, like Avengers Initiative, treated it more like a super-powers draft.

The lack of internal consistency on these important, universe defining points, was frustrating to the max.

And here Bendis completely forgets that Zeus is currently dead in the Marvel Universe, killed in Ares' own miniseries, no less! Quite a big oversight, and it crops up again a few issues later when Doom cites the potential wrath of Zeus as the only reason he doesn't have the Mighty Avengers all killed!

And does Mole Man really seem the type to use the phrase 'come at me'? How long before one of the characters asks 'what's the play, here?' Bah, Bendispeak!

Tony goes the God of War, threatens him and tells him what he would do to fight him. That kind of assumes that Ares lets him walk away from that conversation
