The story starts with Spidey stopping that burglar... for the good publicity. He uses that publicity to get a movie deal, and also starts letting the fame get to his head even as Peter Parker.

Peter decides to play it smart and become a producer as well as an actor. Before he can do anything, he sees the newest edition of the Bugle, which reveals his secret identity. Peter is horrified - that was going to be their gimmick for Spider-Man II!

The next day, gunmen wearing spider masks march into the Bugle offices. Spider-Man joins in them and gives the terrified Jonah what he deserves for revealing his identity - the Spider-Man Award for Outstanding Investigative Reporting in front of dozens of reporters! Jonah takes the award smiling, but Peter realizes that Jonah got the message - cross him again, and he won't be so nice.

Spider-Man is there to offer DD his services as an agent, just like he is with the FF and others. Daredevil is initially uninterested, but Spidey points out what good publicity would do for a vigilante working outside the law. Daredevil agrees, and just like any executive, Spidey immediately tells him to redo his whole look the way Spidey wants it.

"CRIME SYNDICATE RUN FROM BUGLE OFFICES!"

Jonah receives a message that Foswell wants to see him at Ryker's Island. Jonah, despite wanting nothing more to do with Foswell, comes. Foswell needs someone to run his syndicate while he's in the clink, and Jonah wants revenge on Peter Parker. Maybe there's a way for both of them to get what they want. Jonah angrily refuses, that would just make him what everyone says he is! He's not a crook!

Foswell tells him, think about it. Jonah, wandering aimlessly, thinks. He's not a crook. But he's no longer a father, no longer a publisher... There's nothing left. He's nothing.

With no one to help him, he looks toward Heaven... and sees a billboard: "Spider-Man Proudly Presents -- DAREDEVIL!"

And he finds a phone booth and makes a call.

So wealth and power make Peter into a human turd, and causes him to be ugly, and gives him a stupid haircut.
Seems legit.
(Least he didn't make crappy Star Wars knockoffs in this 'verse...)

Oh no, Daredevil is dead! If only there were some person, perhaps affiliated with a group capable of restoring life to a person that could in some way resurrect him.
... Nah, that'd be silly.

It was probably just a reference to the fact that the Superman movie starred Hackman and Brando--and that one you can see (probably without being d-mned).

Superman is always Superman.

Spider-Man is mostly Spider-Man.

I don't know about that, but in the 90's Spider-man cartoon with the final arc of the spider wars, one of the Spider-men recruited was a guy like this... sort of. In that universe he did stop the guy who killed Uncle Ben, and so he was successful and rich and had silver Spider-man armor... but was still a hero (unlike this jackass).

Would Grendel count as well? It's usually more a bi-dent.

As "different" as this was, one smart thing was Spidey promoting the X-Men as heroes. Granted he got paid and the merchandising rights were probably pretty good but the positive press for mutants probably helped.

It's an interesting question, just how galvanizing a moment Uncle Ben's death (coupled with his responsibility for it) is for Peter, and how much of his heroic nature is innate.

Given Peter had to learn the whole "with great power" thing, and given the long list of not very smart to outright terrible decisions he's made over the years, to say nothing of the fact that early Ditko Peter was a right misanthropic git...

There is innate goodness in him, and plenty of it, but there's also innate smegheadedness too.

Yeah, I can see that. Peter did have to take that lesson pretty hard (granted, he's then let it pretty much consume his entire life and lead to its own string of bad decisions) before he became a better person.

Granted, I don't think pre-spider bite Peter was a /bad/ person, but when you've had the life he has, a little power goes to your head pretty quickly.

It's weird that he's wearing his costume ALL THE TIME. Has he got the El Santo thing going on, where his brand includes nobody (officially) knowing who's under the mask?

This..was good. I liked this story. I liked this world. This had an awesome Spider-man/Daredevil relationship I never knew about. Apparently it was written by Peter Gillis, who I've never heard of, but dang, did he work it. Shame the art sucks, Pat Broderick was bad on even good days, but that little blurb on one of the newspapers "Artist quits Spidey comic--cites 'deadlines'" seems like he felt overworked as it was.

So many little details. Getting involved in the mutant popularity problem. Spidey takes over a comic book company, terrorizing Stan Lee and Jack Kirby (hee!) into giving him multiple comic books glorifying him! JJJameson finally defeated...and there's a part of me that thinks he deserves it. His own tactics were used against him. Though I think even a driven-to-despair Jameson wouldn't order the death of Daredevil.

But you'd think a lawyer vigilante like Matt could've seen a lawsuit coming..

I really want to see this What-If expanded into its own mini. "What if Spider-Man had Stan Lee's personality?" just writes itself.

I agree, except that I don't think the art was all that bad. It's not spectacularly good, but I think you are being way too harsh on it.

Gillis did some great work in comics back in the day--he also did Strikeforce: Morituri, a series based on the idea of getting superpowers that killed the recipients at some random time, but no more than a year--and then he just sort of faded away from comics. He also did a great take on Cap not getting thawed out until the present day in What If? that I hope is part of this scan series.

I feel like Ben could have handled that whole thing better. Great power bringing great responsibility or no, sometimes you've got to do what's in your heart. I wonder if having more support from Ben and May would have kept Peter from going so off the rails here.
