Gee, thanks, Tony Stark. Way to crap up utopia.
What a surprise that it should be Tony who caused everything to fall apart.
(Okay, Tony and Simon Williams. And most of it was accidental on Tony's part...)

Also... uh... Thirty days in a confined metal tube? Couldn't Tony Stark, genius inventor, find a quicker and easier way to analyse Simon?
One that didn't gum up Doom's plan to make the world better via harmless brain alteration?

-"Either way, that's something we're going to have to live with for the rest of our lives."-
"... or, and this is just a thought, we could just never mention this ever again."
"Let's do that one."

Doom does get some good lines in here, too.
And it is pretty hilarious that he decides to throw away the entire world just because he can't be arsed delegating things.
Now, really, what did he think was going to happen? Surely ruling Latveria can't be that simple, can it?
(Maybe that's why during Secret Wars he did delegate... and look how that turned out... poor Viccy can't win.)

Doom manages to take over the world, achieves world unity, allows some resistance to keep himself sharp, ends up giving the whole thing up out of boredom..

Why does that sound so familiar?

Jonathan Hickman definitely had "Emperor Doom" in mind while writing Secret Wars 2015. There were all sorts of 80s Marvel nods throughout his work, such as bringing back the New Universe concepts of Starbrand and Nightmask.

Doom and Namor used to team up to attack the heroes all the time.

And I wrote that comment even before I went to read the whole ish and learned that Doom, erm, zapped Namor's fancy clothes to smithereens with no apparent reason whatsoever.

Yeah, that's an excellent point. Really this story should have been one of the first crossover events, starting with Simon waking up and finding himself in bizarro world, and then discovering what had happened to the Avengers, X-Men, Fantastic Four, and possibly creation a coalition team to fight Doom.

But as a standalone story I think it's still a lot of fun.

I'll just sit here in the corner and cry. This is friggin HILARIOUS. Psychoprism, make up! Namor with a silmaril. The vote for the Emperor of the Earth. At last, a challenge to my authority! And how Doom basically let the Avengers win 'cause he was bored to hell by state affairs.
Oh gods. Oh gods. This is... priceless.

I kind of dislike this story for saying that Doom's authoritarian rule would be a utopia, instead of the alternative of "everyone thinks it's great because they're brainwashed into it"

When I read this the first time, my assumption was that Doom somehow cheated in his contest of wills with Killgrave just for the sake of breaking him.

Doom casually breaking his word seems out of character. I expected some Lawful Evil dickery like giving Namor "the seas"-- landlocked salt-water lakes-- but not the ocean. Or saying that Namor owns the water itself but Doom owns the land under the oceans. Just saying "nyeh nyeh, not coming through" isn't Doom's style.

Nope. Third panel of first scan: "when inhaled or absorbed through the skin" means your anosmia's not a good block.

Now, your demonstrated devotion to Doug Ramsey, that might just be enough will power to help you resist.

Always loved this graphic novel. From way back when Simon could be written as if he wasn't an absolute heel. And Doom is great throughout. Always loved that line about his greatest flaw. It's something true of a lot of megalomaniac head villains!
