What's the current story behind Rat Queens?
I saw that it's back with a new #1 after the writer fired the artist for domestic abuse, then got a replacement artist, then dismissed the replacement artist without telling her,and now has another, less good artist.

Is the Rat Queens brand toxic, or has it regained some of its early lustre?

I'm not sure what you mean. That art by Owen Gieni looks gorgeous.

I don't think the first incident reflects badly on them, it's not like they made the person abuse people, and they dealt with it. The second I would prefer more information before judging, maybe there's some drama there, or maybe it was just some misunderstanding.

And maybe the new artist isn't as good. This doesn't make the brand toxic, it just makes the behind the scenes bullshit a mess, which isn't exactly uncommon.

Heck, behind the scenes drama is most of the reason Image exists in the first place.

In my opinion it's pretty toxic at this point.

It's still a fun enough concept and I know there are audiences really craving those sorts of stories, but Rat Queens itself is all but done for. Speaking personally, I'm not at all inclined to read the series, nor to recommend it to anyone with some very heavy and clear caveats.

I'm honestly a little surprised that the series is still going at this point. Especially following the second controversy it seemed like the series was destined to quietly end, that the writer has brought it back again either speaks to a complete lack of shame or a real belief in the series. I'm somewhat inclined to believe that it's the former.
