scans_dailyBusiek's announced that, after the Dark Age is finished, there will be no more Astro City mini-series for the foreseeable future.
That's because the series is going monthly and ongoing again after that. Resuming the numbering where the previous ongoing left off, Astro City #23 will hit stores after the Dark Age Book 4 and the Silver Agent one-shot. As always, Brent Anderson and Alex Ross remain on art duties.
Some Busiek quotes from the Wildstorm panel:
"One thing that the experience of doing Trinity this past year has taught me is that my health is back to the point where I can handle a book like Astro City monthly. . ."
"We've got lots of good stuff planned to look into the inner working of the Honor Guard. We're going to do a story that reveals the origins of Winged Victory that also involves Samaritan and the new Confessor. A story about the decades long N-Forcer program. I'm finally going to do a talking gorilla story. We've got lots of stuff coming."
He's also doing another monthly series called Kurt Busiek's American Gothic.
Busiek:
"You might see stories in it ranging from the story of a long-haul trucker whose wife died while he was on the road so he never had a chance to say good-bye, who finds himself driving her ghost on to her final reward; the story of a girl in an economically-depressed fishing town in Rhode Island, who discovers that the Norse god Thor is living in exile on a coastal island nearby; the story of some college students who accidentally resurrect Ninkasi, the Sumerian goddess of beer; the tale of a voodoo priest called in to deal with the unquiet ghost of a murdered business; the story of a washed-up cooking show host whose quest for the perfect burger leads him out of the real world and into the borderlands of Hell. . ."
"What happened with American Gothic was, the whole time I was writing Trinity, I had this year-long story outlined, so the part of my brain that thinks up new stuff kept coming up with new stuff and I'd write it down as "well, I'll talk to DC about this -- you know, new projects -- when we're close to done with Trinity," and when I was done, I realized I had a whole bunch of fantasy stories set in the U.S., and I thought, "Well, I could try to sell these all as mini-series and have to sell each one independently, or I could come up with a title, jam 'em all together, and have to get people to say yes only once. . ."
"It's not quite accurate to say that this does for fantasy what Astro City does for superheroes, but they would very much like me to say that, so I'm saying [it]."
And they previewed the covers for the Astra two-parter as well.

Those Astra covers are pretty. Glad to see she got a relatively normal childhood.

Date: 2009-07-27 01:42 pm (UTC)That's weird cause I didn't really know how to feel about that. I read it last night right before I went to bed. I didn't really enjoy "The Dark age" and stopped buying. My thinking of late had been that the whole Astro city thing had run out of gas, and KB had simply decided he preferred writing the mainstream titles. Recently I came across the old title of Astro city 1/2 (?) the one where the guy has memories of a girl he never met and becomes obsessed. In the end the Hanged man explains to him it was his wife/girlfriend from a timeline that no longer exists. This story reminded me of how good the book once was.
Personally I think KB and Astrocity is one of the main reasons for the end of the Dark age of comics in general (Gritted teeth,mercenaries,ridiculous anatomy , anti heroes) and got things back to character driven heroes. So I am very glad he will be back to a full time book.
