'I am *soooo* tired of “evil and crazy.” It’s always bothered me that so many writers saw Jericho as defective or disturbed just because he could not speak. It always bothered me that Rose’s Asian heritage was all but ignored. In some ways, I am trying to echo the kinder, gentler DC of 2016 which aggressively protects the dignity of a very diverse DCU. I also like the idea of Deathstroke having somehow managed to produce a genuinely good and noble (albeit obviously flawed, as we are exploring in Jericho’s story arc) offspring, which has to irritate him on so many levels.' -- Christopher J. Priest

Isherwood, " Richard "/Luis, and now Etienne- everyone in this series so far who's been in a relationship with one of Slade's kids's also worked for/with him in some fashion.

That's just hilarious.

I don't think Jericho's lousy characterization had anything to do with him being unable to speak. It was being Deathstroke's son

Except he's ALWAYS been Deathstroke's son.

His crappy characterisation was pretty much entirely down to the weird "bad blood will out" route that DC kept pushing with their younger heroes, see Kon-El, and Boomerang Jr, heck even Risk, and the last Jericho revamp... for just a handful of examples.

I think both had a hand. As Icon_UK said there was DC's fixation with "Bad Blood" throughout 00s that some characters made out better than others. However, I'd wager Joey's muteness also was a factor but not in the " 'other' is scary" type way like Priest suggests but more "a mute character requires extra work and we aren't going to try" type way because hardly anyone tried to write Joey well in that era up to the New52 plus straight up erasing his disability.

Wolfman even admitted writing Joey was hard without Perez (Joey's real creator) which iirc helped Wolfman in deciding to make him go evil and eventually die...

Red Lion-Black Panther minus the nobility and a penchant for genocide
