And just a couple years later, along came "Age of Ultron" & "Rage of Ultron" to disprove that the Scientist Supreme would "get through this."

Was this before or after the Crossing?

The time the story takes place in is long before the Crossing (which was mid-90s)

Yeah, this was around the early 80's, just prior to the start of the original Secret Wars. If childhood memory serves, I think this was when Roger Stern was writing Avengers, Byrne was writing Fantastic Four (but She-Hulk had not yet joined), and Denny O'Neill was obviously in the middle of Stark's second bout with alcoholism.

Guilt over Hank and Jan is part of why Tony started drinking again? I thought it was more of a drawn-out suicide attempt because that was stated on panel.

Tony started drinking again in Iron Man #166 in 1983. If Hank and Jan had anything to do with that, well I'd have to read the issue again.

Uh, Hank... if you wanted to avoid an awkward scene with your ex, you might've wanted to leave a bit faster. She is giving him the maximum stink-eye in that last panel.
