Psyche issues

When I worked at Habitat for Humanity, one of families who we worked with had lost someone who was forced to be a child soldier. I was in my twenties when I talked to them, but you're never old enough to not feel shocked by how horrific some of that stuff is.

When I was a kid I loved Robin and the Teen Titans. Now that I'm 26 I can't stand the idea of someone going into war if they're under the age of 18. You're just not meant to be in those situations at a young age. Heck, since no one is immune to PTSD I guess nobody is actually meant to be in those situations, but it goes doubly for youths.

I think that Hit Girl is meant to be screwed up here, because at the end of the day, her childhood was as bad as Red Mists - he had an evil role model, and her role model trained her to be a weapon, not a person.

It's funny. I watched the Harry Potter series recently and I couldn't help but be bothered by how young they were. Age 10-17 and so much combat. When I was the same age as Harry I never caught on to how every student at Hogwarts became a child soldier (some only for a short time, but really all of them had to fight for their lives). It's sort of disturbing to realize that many of those minor characters in Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw all have psychological trauma that we just never saw because they weren't main characters.

Wasn't her dad also less sympathetic in the comics?

In the comics the whole bit of the "mafia killed her mother" was made up and he's just grooming her to be 'super hero'. In the movie the backstory is legit. They've also softened him a bit; in the movies he's goofy Nicolas Cage channeling Adam West, in the comics he's a right-wing nutjob. There's also bits like him giving his daughter cocaine (we see her snort it thinking that it's a magic dust that gives her powers).

In some regards I think the movie is better (they do a much better job fleshing out Red Mist for example and Nicolas Cage gives a really good performance) but at the end of the day it's basically a Spider-Man movie with R-rated violence crossed with Superbad style humor.

So just to be clear... are we meant to see Mindy as sympathetic?

(Not that Debbie is any better, but geez.)

She has been really patient with Debbie though. To me this is the adventure of a dangerous girl adjusting to high school drama resulting in bizar entertainment.

yeah, I still hate this universe... but that girl was like... well... all the people in his books are horrible... Mindy is by far being very patient.

This is revenge fantasy porn for all those social situations where someone is just *evil* from your perspective, and you wish someone would do 'something' about it.

And this is Miller taking the Batman approach to 'something'.

So yeah, in real life both of these girls would 'avoid at all cost' but in the context of the fantasy, we're supposed to be mildly rooting for Mindy.

Probably in the way Frank Castle is. Kick-Ass is the character the audience is meant to relate to and the only one IIRC has thought boxes so we can see what he's thinking.

Do you know all those old Africa stories written by white folks, where there's nothing in the continent but jungle and primitive shamanistic tribes? Or the ones with Maya-style ruins in the Amazon?

This reads like a grown-up man desperately trying to imagine teen girl culture, ten thousand metaphorical kilometers from afar.

Like Jack London making a career writing about manly men manning it up in the frozen Yukon after spending a few months in a bar in downtown Anchorage.
