In the comments to these weekly posts (and only these posts), it's your chance to go as off topic as you like. Talk about non-comics stuff, thread derail, and just generally chat amongst yourselves.

So Easter is over, and chocolate consumption levels will now presumably start to level off towards something less... excessive (With a short spike allowing for cheap-chocolate going on sale yesterday)

The world political situation is still, well, "royally screwed" seems to be the most cogent term. Take your pick; North
Korea, Syria,  Russia, Turkey, the USA, the UK and Marie Le Pen veering even more radical right wing as the French Presidential election hoves into view.

And just to add to our British fun,
Theresa May has announced a nsap general Election for May 8th... oh this is JUST what we need....

On lighter news new Doctor Who started at the weekend, with the introduction of new companion Bill Potts, and I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed both her as a character, and the story. The Doctor has a new story setup and a new job as a University lecturer whilst he's looking after... well, I won't spoil anything about that. But I do like that his reason for choosing Bill as his new companion was not some weird sci-fi plot thingie like Clara. He just liked her attitude and curiosity ("When most people find something they don't understand, they frown, but you... you smile") and Peter Capaldi giving a lecture would pretty much have been my student dreams come true.

And the rather wistful, light story was peppered with lovely little nods to the classic series, such as the photos the Doctor has on his desk, or the background aliens with the silly wigs who show up when... but again, not going to spoil it if people haven't been able to see it yet.

(Also, rumours abound that Kris Marshall is to be the next Doctor, news that leaves me fairly cold as, whilst a tolerable, if bland, light drama/comedy actor, I've seen nothing in his many years of serviceable-ish work to suggest he has the range the Doctor requires. I appear not to be alone in my concerns

Oh, and we've had a larger than usual influx of new members recently. not sure if some of them are just people migrating over to DW from LJ, or are a nice little batch of newcomers, but in any event, welcome.

I'd welcome Kris as the new Doctor (although I'm still sad that Capaldi is going, he deserved a better showrunner than later!Moffat). I hope the rumour is true and we can skip the usual uncertainty which I personally find very irritating. I found the latest episode...competent? I can't say much about it other than it was a competent bit of television. Of course competent is a massive step up from the last full season.

Geopolitics? Oh, why isn't there a giant asteroid out there with our name on it? It would be more merciful at this point.

See, I see everyone around saying last Saturday's episode of Doctor Who was great, but...
I though it was the most dullest, boring, plodding, meandering fifty minutes of all Doctor Who. Even when something happened, it was still hard to find any reason to care or give a damn at all.
It really felt like Moffat was alternating between glancing up from the script to look at the clock, and patting himself smugly on the back for writing such "clever" dialogue.
What human being sees the inside of a giant blue box, seeing obviously alien machinery and something that's clearly dimensionally transcendental and thinks "is this a kitchen"?
If that was meant to be funny, or quirky, it failed. Instead, Bill just sounds like her brain fell out.
...
... on the plus side, Matt Lucas' character was less annoying than he was during the X-Mas special. He almost felt like an actual character.

Given my previously stated desire for the next Doctor, the apparent casting of Some Guy has just got me mildly annoyed.
But that doesn't even hold a tiny candle to Chibnall's utterly moronic statement when asked about the possibility of casting a woman as the Doctor.
"We don't want to make casting a gimmick."

... Yeah.
Not feeling a great upsurge in confidence about the future of Who.

Also, finally got to see Rogue One on DVD.
It's serviceable, but I'm unclear on why the Death Star needed an origin movie.
Giacchino's music is just flat and kind of generic, as usual.
Hard to believe this is the same person who gave us the score to The Incredibles, when his modern work is so repetitive.

Because Mickey Mouse paid George Lucas over $4 billion, so he could put the Star Wars franchise on his movie assembly line.

Jumping in a bit, sorry:

I thought the movie itself was so much wasted potential. We have all these awesome characters with intriguing backstory--what's the deal with Cassian joining the Rebels at six and 'losing everything'? How did Baze and Chirrut get so buddy-buddy? What prompted Bodhi's heel-face turn? Why is Saw so extreme?--and then... nothing. Just more action scenes. There's never any real growth or development. Jyn goes from "I don't care about your stupid rebellion" to "THE REBELLION NEEDS HOOOOOPE" after a single viewing of dead holographic Dad (which is another wasted character). You can pretty much set your watch to all the plot twists.

It wasn't terrible. I loved K2-SO and Darth Vader stole pretty much every scene he was in. But it's weird to see people selling this as filet mignon when I thought it was more like a McDonald's burger.

Still looking for work, not having any luck.

Over Easter weekend, I went to Minicon, a small but prestigious literary SF convention. Full report will be up on my blog later. This was the last convention where Mark "Mark Reads" Oshiro will be a Fan Guest of Honor as he's shortly to be professionally published.

Over at my blog, the most recent post is about "The Physics of Everyday Things" by James Kakalios (author of "The Physics of Superheroes.") http://www.skjam.com/2017/04/14/book-review-the-physics-of-everyday-things/

So mercifully the bill proposed last Tuesday that would outlaw same-sex marriage in North Carolina and refuse to recognize same-sex marriages performed in other states was said to be effectively dead less than 24 hours later, by Tim Moore, the (Republican) Speaker of the State House of Representatives.

But after Moore's announcement, things took a weird turn. Because on Wednesday, the main person responsible for this bill, Representative Larry Pittman (a Republican), called Abraham Lincoln "the same sort [of] tyrant" as Hitler.

The tl;dr version is that a commenter on FB called Pittman evil from wanting to reinstate a ban on gay marriage, to which Pittman replied it wouldn’t be a reinstatement, but rather “it would be upholding the law of this State in spite of the opinion of a federal court that had no business interfering,” which led to a discussion of states’ rights, which led one person to write: “The Civil War is over. The Fed won. Get over it.” Pittman's response was, quote: “And if Hitler had won, should the world just get over it? Lincoln was the same sort if [sic] tyrant, and personally responsible for the deaths of over 800,000 Americans in a war that was unnecessary and unconstitutional.”

There has been no condemnation of -- or any other response to -- this from Moore or the NC Republican Party, though at least one NC Republican has spoken out and made a meme. Also, PolitiFact stepped in to fact-check Pittman's claim of the Civil War being unconstitutional & of Lincoln being personally responsible for 800,000+ deaths (spoiler: no).

Not much going on in my neck of the woods - trying to keep depression from setting in.

Also signed up for a Magical Girl themed art show, and am trying to come up with ideas on what to do for it. Sadly my knowledge of magical girls is pretty standard, and I know everyone and their dog is going to do Sailor Moon.

Might I suggest Princess Tutu? It's a really good Magical girl series.

It starts out pretty standard. Leaning heavily on the sugary side, even. You occasionally get some hints that Things Are Not As They Seem(TM), but overall Season 1 is very tame and stereotypical.

Then Season 2 kicks in, and it's subversion after subversion with genuinely shocking plot-twists and drama and one of the creepiest villains you'll ever see.

Season 2 has been described as "darkfic of Season 1." I agree with that, but I'll also add that it's not grimdark for the sake of grimdark. Even as the stakes get higher and higher and people get more and more hurt, there is always a fundamental layer of hope, and the heroine never loses her compassion. It's really worth watching.

Couple suggestions

Magic Knight Rayearth - Not quite the same vein of "Magic Girl," as Sailor Moon but it hits enough of the same beats to count. Three girls taken to alternate world where they get evolving armor, and weapons.

Cutie Honey F - It's Cutie Honey but for Girls (The show that took over Sailor Moon's timeslot IIRC).

I am French and I am so fucking scared right now. Out of 4 candidates with a chance to win, 3 completely terrify me. So here's hoping Macron gets to the 2nd round and then wins it. I'm not for him, but I am definitely against all the others, who could all seriously harm France and in some cases the EU.

So it seems like Lego Dimensions is going to stop being supported after the current crop of figures is finished. I saw Disney Infinity fail at retail (since I do work with this product) I hoped the novelty of being allowed to do proper crossovers would keep Lego going.

I have a few figures and the base game (sadly picked it up just before they tossed in Supergirl) but I never got around to playing it. I want to, but now I'm wondering if I should wait for the figures to go on clearance before buying them.
