Y'know, for once this event is a story that really feels like one should. Action, turns, and intrigue.
I like Fisk's "heroic" turn here. Interested to see where it goes.
Also, Rick saying we need hope feels so relevant today.

Fisk is a realist. He's seen this sort of thing before - he knows the heroes will eventually take the world back, or is at least gambling that they will. They always have before, after all.

So if there are people who see him as a savior, well, when the sun returns - he's in good graces.

And if the heroes don't win, then he's the goddamn Kingpin and will either go down fighting, or rise to to the top of the new regime (which he has already got underway by disposing of competition like these crooks)

Exactly.

Even then I think he considers himself to be a protector of New York so his motives are probably genuine as far as they can be for someone like him.

Fisk has a "I prevent New York from tearing itself apart with criminal anarchy" perspective. A few stories actually back that up: Fisk disappears and the hero is busy with other criminals trying to seize power.

I'm probably guilty of oversimplification here, but I think most writers write Fisk as more of a "you can't destroy New York, it's where I keep my stuff" sort of villain.

Or maybe "hey, you can't terrorize my city; only I get to terrorize my city."

I guess it's a "depends on the writer" situation but a number of times Kingpin is written as someone who loves his city and views what he does as necessary for New York to thrive.

Perhaps, but only within the scope of "how does this benefit Fisk?"

I've never bought Fisk's expressions of civic pride or duty as anything other than self-serving excuses for his own ruthlessness and ambition.

"If I benefit, then New York benefits" is probably the thought process.

He does protect New York… in the same way that an abusive, exploitative husband protects his wife from (other) threats. He sees the city as his.

I agree. This is the first "EVENT" in a long time that actually has me excited about both the idea and the execution.

A Fisk quote from the 90's Spider-Man cartoon...

" "There's no profit to be made in the destruction of the planet. It's bad for business."

Being worried about Dagger running out of her life-light is sensible, NOT being worried about what a life-light-starved Cloak might become, is a little less so, as it tends to not end well.

Would he become starved, though? I mean, it's the dark dimension inside him that craves the light and since they're already in it (and she's projecting into it directly)...

Dagger has her light back powers back? Last I saw, she and Cloak had their powers swapped during Spider Island.

Has Aaron ever explained why Strange isn't using the Eye of Agamotto anymore now that magic has been building back up to its former levels? He's used it to give the whole Darkforce Dimension a rather explosive hissyfit in the past.

Didn't Aggamatto turn out to be evil, or something akin to that?

Yeah, or at least selfish and unconcerned with collateral damage during Bendis' New Avengers Run. But the Eye's power apparently worked separately from his (hence his trying to reclaim it), and Strange did reference having it after the Secret Wars reboot. It seems to draw on ambient magic energy rather than having a direct pipeline to Agamotto himself—it stopped working during the recent Death of Magic storyline, and way back in an old Strange Tales story it grew "sleepy" after being overused in too short a time.

I'm also not clear about whether Agamotto, Oshtur, and Hoggoth were rebooted along with the physical Multiverse or if they occupied a higher plane unaffected by the Beyonders. My vote would be for the latter, but Marvel writers haven't weighed in yet.
