That... wasn't my advice.

Why does it even need to be thumbnailed?

"Like I explained that time, I use thumbnails so that people who've read one of the books already but not the other can avoid spoilers."

Why not split them into separate posts, then, and hide them behind the cut? That way you'd avoid spoilers AND avoid making readers click through on thumbnails.

I love that Galactus mentioned that despite what the people that made the planetary shield thought, Galactus is powerful enough to destroy it, though maybe not atv the moment since he's recovering from his encounter with Logos.

That really is one of those "you didn't think this through at all, huh?" moments for them.

Okay, maybe it'll keep an alien fleet out. But Galactus is a little bit higher than an alien fleet in the pecking order.
(Like assuming a wooden fence will keep a tank away. It'll probably slow it down for about... oh, a second, but that's it.)

Why on earth did they think Galactus would help them? Sure he's now the Lifebringer instead of the Planet Eater, but that doesn't change his universal scope. Dude's not going to care about a squabble on one planet as to which group of primitive monkeys is in charge.

Though it's more to do because he has more pressing matters to focus on, specifically what's happening with Eternity.

Sure, but he'll always have more pressing matters to focus on. Even if Eternity were not chained, Galactus would be bringing life to some planet. That's gotta be more important than a small subset of the life on one planet (humans) arguing about who's in charge.

So Monica, who is made of light, cannot get through a force-field that is at least partially transparent.

Sigh.

I could buy it if maybe the energy frequencies of the shield were constantly fluctuating so she couldn't go through without knowing the specific frequencies. But even that's a stretch.

They really shouldn't have made it transparent.

But if it weren't transparent, how would sunlight go through it?
(On the other hand, plunging the entire planet into neverending darkness would be certainly symbolic)

Honestly, I think this is just one of those things you have to accept about light permeable force fields in comics. They only keep out the "bad" light and let in the good. Except when they don't.

They make a point of mentioning in the comic that the shield is fully reactive and is intended to counter any attempt to breach it. If she tries to slip through as light, it'll go opaque and keep her out.

Since her being outside the shield is part of Cap's plan, it's probably an acceptable fan-wank to assume that he's planned specifically for Monica anyway.

Sure, except Monica is moving at light speed, which is the fastest information can travel. By the time whatever monitoring system has registered Monica's movement, she's already past the shield. That is, by the time light travels the distance from Monica to anyone's sensors, the light that is Monica has moved a similar distance and thus breached the shield.

I'll also note that Monica is effectively invisible and undetectable when she's moving at light speed. The only way you can see her is if photons from her make it to your retina, which means Monica is in your retina. At that point she can blast your brain and you already lost.

I like it when forcefields are magical. Just say Strange put it up or something, and I don't ask these questions. :)

That's a weird place to draw the suspension-of-disbelief line. It's already a reactive force field that covers the entire planet and is strong enough to withstand hits from some of the most destructive forces on record, while simultaneously not requiring 100% or more of the planet's energy output capacity. We're already firmly in science-is-magic territory.

How much harder is it to believe that whatever systems govern its reactivity are also fast enough to keep Monica out, or that there's some quirk about her power set that's already been planned for, since the shield is specifically designed as a method of exiling the planet's most powerful superhumans?

The former is highly improbable, but I can imagine highly efficient power sources in a world with flying power armor. The latter is physically impossible, as in "cannot happen under the laws of physics." I don't see that as a weird place to draw the line.

I'm actually cool with blocking light-based attacks. I can come up with some theory where the forcefield only allows light up to some point, then reflects any excess power. Which it would have to for people inside the forcefield to even know they were being attacked with lasers or whatnot. My problem here is that Monica is not a light-based attack. She's just light trying to get through.

It's kinda like having an air-permeable forcefield. I buy that it might protect people from hurricanes. I don't buy that it can keep a gas-based superbeing out, when the forcefield is explicitly shown to allow its occupants to breathe comfortably.

To paraphrase an Isaac Asimov quote Mort Weisinger made up: " That optics doesn't work that way is a theory. That Monica can't get through the shield is a fact. "

(The original quote was about the speed of light and Superman.)
