The Ultimates Squared #6 - "War in Heaven"

In our ongoing exploration of what makes an "important" comic that "matters", this issue features THE HISTORY OF EVERYTHING! And PSI-HAWK! -- Al Ewing

Restored, Galactus obtains information about the First Firmament by picking up and literally eating down his mouth its servant:

"...and the next attack is coming soon."

Omega symbols on the hand.

Fitting Omega the Unknown into this'd be a kludge, but it'd be an entertaining one.

I believe it references the Omegas and Prester John from Fraction's Defenders series a few years ago.

The best thing about Al Ewing is that he's apparently as open to future works re-interpreting his stuff in the same way he does to past works.

" [Moridun of the Fifth Cosmos] may have created the Cancerverse for all we know — it seems to fit in with his worldview. If someone came along and said that’s what happened, I’d have no objection. "

It's a lovely attitude, indeed.

Ewing's knowledge of continuity is simultaneously beautiful, astounding and utterly terrifying.

When Kieron Gillen and Jonathan Hickman left Marvel, they passed their cosmic retcon notes on to Al Ewing as the new Keeper of the Retcons, just as they were passed down from Mark Gruenwald to Kurt Busiek.

I feel like Ewing should have saved the "with our powers combined" line for the Troubleshooters summoning Psi-Hawk

Too on the nose?

Psi-Hawk predates Captain Planet.

And then America goes to college, loses fifty IQ points, decides to just punch everything and gets surrounded by people who tell her just how awesome she is.

I wonder how Ewing feels about how America is written in her own comic as opposed to Ultimates? Did he have any say? Does the Ultimate's editor feel slighted? I wonder what things are like in the Marvel bullpen when issues like this arise...

"America" feels like the author has only read Young Avengers and ignored the Ultimates entirely.

[personal profile] long_silence 2017-05-18 05:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean did they even really read Young Avengers? It's not like America and Kate were actually all that close throughout 90% of that run.

To be fair, that's not entirely true. They mentioned her girlfriend Lisa and the fact that America is leading the Ultimates. But beyond that, yeah.

You could very well be right. She certainly does not seem to understand how Peggy Carter should be written or the X-Men, so I'm guessing her knowledge of comic books is pretty limited.

But I think even if she did her homework her writing would still suck.

Wait there's more to her character? I thought she was in character in her own comic.

To be honest I couldn't say, because all I know of the character is what I've read here and some of the Youtube reviews I've watched. But comparing Ultimate appearances and appearances in her own title she's a completely different character. I chalk it up to 1) terrible editorial leadership and 2) ill-advised hiring practices.

Y'know I never the hype about her character I get she's a reprinting the LGBT and Latinos
But all I've heard about her character is how badass she is and how all the team members from Ultimates think she's the greatest.

But outside of that I've heard no faults in decisions, no struggles, not even some guilt of mistake. But that's a reoccurring trend that I've been noticing lately with the new generation of Marvel heroes.

Thank you for both the post and lack of thumbnails. The presentation and scene selection was understandable and whetted my appetite to seek out the series.

I love everything about this series.

Then I tried to read "America" and could not get past issue 2. Actually, I should have stopped at issue 1, but I liked MAC enough to give her solo series a second chance. What the hell, man?

You made it an issue further than I did. I buy comics to be entertained, not to get lectured about identity politics.

Yeah. I don't mind being lectured about identity politics (or anything else), so long as I'm entertained. But America completely failed on that score.
