I dunno if it's so much that Luke feels off as much as his particular brand of slightly-too-earnest old-fashioned good guy heroism straight from 1970s Lucas in full power-of-myth 1930s-movie-serial-homaging mode just seems a bit out of place when dropped into Doctor Aphra's knowing/snarky/quippy/winking/meta/po-mo/post-irony 21st century corner of the Star Wars universe.

I suppose that's it. Also, by this point, Luke shouldn't be so flustered by what's going on around him. He's destroyed the Death Star and been hanging out with royalty. I'm not saying he should know all the protocols and such, but he shouldn't be too uncomfortable.

Yeah but Leia is a warrior princess who he's best buddies with. It makes sense that on his own with *Aphra* as his contact that he's flustered by a high society gala.

I doubt Leia attends those very frequently, much less with Luke in tow.

Yeah, Luke's entire exposure to anything like high society is through Leia, and protocol lessons wouldn't be either one of their's priority

Plus they've both got a protocol droid to handle all that stuff.

I believe the writer mentioned in a pre-series interview that the dynamic does shift as the story goes on, starting with Aphra largely "getting the better" of Luke but Luke turning that on its' ear later on.

I do suspect that the Luke/Aphra ship will both be teased and sunk by the time this series is over.

Oh, no doubt -- if nothing else, the dripping-with-veiled-condescension manner with which Aphra keeps calling Luke "farm boy" just screams "warning: underestimation going on -- be prepared to be unpleasantly surprised when this guy proves to you he's not just the dumb hick you're dismissing him as". But still, while the clash is no doubt deliberate, it's still a bit of a clash.

On re-reading, apparently I was misreading an d Aprha doesn't actually call Luke "farm boy". In that case, please mentally amend my comment to read "almost everything she says to Luke drips with barely veiled condescension."

The films never really delve into it, but Luke would be naive about a lot of things, he'd also a lot more practical about things than you'd think, since he grew up on a hell-world where he was dirt poor, the environment was pretty much completely hostile (if the heat of the endless deserts didn't get you, either the Sandpeople, the two metre long womp rats or the lethal sandstorms probably would), slavery was legal (and the entire concept of "legal" depended on an uneasy alliance between the Empire and slug crime lords) and

Though I might be biased by the fact that "Splinter of the Minds Eye" was the first Star Wars EU I ever read when it first came out, where we see Luke and Leia stuck on a basically lawless frontier world and he's better at navigating it than she is because it's closer to his old life than anything she's dealt with.

I really never got the impression that Ben and Beru were "dirt poor". Hardly rich, but they had a fairly big farm, with droids etc.

Fair point, though are droids (required to keep the place running) a sign of wealth for a farmer, or would that be having farmhands?

Lars mentions that he hopes to be able to hire farmhands (note plural) to replace Luke if he leaves (So Luke must have been working his tail off for them)

But yeah, "dirt poor" might have been a little bit of an exaggeration,

Given that paid human labor is going to be at a premium when compared to slave droid labor ...

The general depiction of the Lars family's circumstances is certainly more affluent than that Anakin and Padme "enjoyed". I suspect nobody on Tattooine really enjoys a very high standard of living.

As others stated it's as if Luke was transported too a different era, hence the oil and water effect of their personalities and mannerism sliding off.

I like it. Now I'm shipping Luke/Aphra!

(I don't even know if she leans that way, and I doubt Disney would be down. Let me have my dreams!)

I have no objections really, though best be careful around the more hardcore SW fans, there still holding a candle for LukeXMara Jade.

Aphra's personality just doesn't feel all that consistent with her own title, she's acting like a winking, social manipulator femme fatale type character which just feels wrong to me. Plus she's much more congenitally comic book beautiful here which really throws it all off.

She wants something, and is using Luke to get it. I suspect she knows Luke well enough to know how to manipulate him to achieve it.

oh, come on!
Luke has been around Han long enough by now to know a BAD idea when he hears one!
He has been front row center for enough of them.

true enough, but some people you are friends with out of a combination of morbid fascination and the desire to be the voice of reason.

plus Han IS dating Luke's sister, so unless he wants to cut his sister out of his life all together, he is kinda stuck with Han.

Am I THAT predictable? :)

Yeah, fair enough.. I probably am..

Believe it or not, I'm not that much of a fan of it. It's just TOO fancy... the shirt with it's many layered collar and OTT cuffs. Something like a sheet metal cravat and jacket lapels that look like they were cut out by a lunatic amateur

The colours look good (it's hard to go wrong with monochrome), but keep it simple and let the pretty farm boy shine through.

Looks like they were going for a twist on one of those late 18th/early 19th century suits, but rather than the kind of frills they tended to use they just used... Whatever the heck that cutout thing is.

It is a shame as, having seen photos of young Mark Hamill in "Amadeus"

A simpler suit would have suited him...

You know before this series got released Marvel published an article whether Luke should trust Aphra.

And honestly I wouldn't have been surprised if that article was just Kieron Gillen typing "No.".
