Among the most bizarre comic-book responses to sixties counterculture was the short-lived DC series Brother Power the Geek (created by Joe Simon), about a mannequin who miraculously comes to life and uses his super-strength to defend his hippie friends while avoiding capture by the Establishment. While this is most definitely not a pro-hippie comic (unlike Stan Lee, neither Simon nor his editors had much sympathy for the movement), it's so cracky I just had to share it.

From Brother Power the Geek #1 (Sept.-Oct. 1968). Story, layouts and inks by Joe Simon; pencils by Al Bare.

Our story begins in San Francisco with a biker gang attack on a coterie of hippies who, both unwilling and unable to defend themselves (because all hippies are lazy good-for-nothings, don'tcha know[/sarcasm]), retreat bruised and bloodied to their crashpad, an abandoned tailor's shop.

Over the next several months, Nick and Paul teach Brother Power English... specifically, American Hippie English. Then they somehow enroll him in elementary school which, unsurprisingly, embarasses him to no small extent. He decides to educate himself instead.

The circus ringmaster asks "Pow" for help repairing a float. This turns out to be a trap, and the Geek is captured. Nick and Paul assume for some reason that their enemies, the Mongrels biker gang, are behind this. Since they can't hope to fight them (see above), they decide to dress up and stage a "comic book hero happening" which they think will intimidate the bikers or something. Then this happens:

*blink blink* I... what... yeah.

To the surprise of absolutely no one reading this story, this fails to intimidate the Mongrels, who make short work of the hippies, then inform them they're not behind Brother Power's capture after all. After days of wandering, Paul and Nick finally think to check out the Psychedelic Circus where, sure enough, they find their friend chained up, soaking wet (which apparently renders him unconscious), with the other sideshow attractions guarding him. Finally the two "brothers" decide to fight back, and in the resulting chaos, a chance electrical mishap revives our hero.

"Pow's" campaign is cut short when the ringmaster enlists the police's help tracking him down for destroying his circus.

Brother Power relieves Hound Dawg of his motorcycle and takes off on it. Unfortunately, the National Guard is soon on his tail. With the city exits closed off, and with no other way to evade capture, he drives off the Golden Gate Bridge into San Francisco Bay.

Yes--find out in my next "swinging" post what became of Brother Power!

I've always liked the idea of Brother Power.

Didn't Neil Gaiman try to adapt this guy to the Modern Age? How'd that shake out, again?

Reading this I thought to myself, surely this seems like the sort of weird old thing, that a Vertigo writers would use for a horror story.

It's a nice change to see comics civilians see a weird creature and be super-nice to it!
