cyberghostface: (Mr. Vengeance)

One more Bradbury story, this one from The Vault of Horror #29.

After an incident in which a kid is pushed out a window by his peers and killed, Mr. Howard quits teaching. Seven years later, he is forced to substitute after another teacher becomes ill. He is resentful of the children, saying that they are monsters thrust from Hell because the devil could no longer take care of them. The kids hate him in return.

It gets to the point when a little girl plays hop scotch outside his house, he chases her off. He thinks to himself that if he has to put up with this for another week he will go mad, and wonders why we all couldn't be born as adults instead.

This teaches us the most important lesson of all.

Little children are monsters

The children? By the part that "their teacher's face twisted and he was carefully sarcastic" I was already rooting for his death. Hey, teacher, leave them kids alone!

Unpleasant yes (though as noted, he doesn't even want the job teaching them, but must have been forced somehow), but not worthy of being murdered in cold blood by a bunch of bloody minded kids.

In real life, of course not! But in a revenge-horror comic? The only question is which character I hate more, because someone's going down.

Is the artist one W. Newman? If not, they're doing a terrific impression!

I love how the ghoulish, unholy apparition that is the Keeper of the Vault is subtly trying to get kids to go read some goddamn Ray Bradbury.

Ray Bradury did more "murderous children" stories than I thought.

Meaning he did three. This, "The Veldt" and "Little Assassin." Probably more.
