A nice person on tumblr posted some scans of this truly excellent scene. They gave me their permission to repost them here. I hope you enjoy them as much as we did :)

As you know, Injustice is an AU that takes place years in the future. But Injustice 2 #8 has a flashback scene. A young Damian is growing restless, craving independence, and Bruce decides to give him a chance to prove himself: a night alone.

(The issue also has a fantastic scene of Alfred schooling Bruce)

Bruce takes Damian to the farthest point of Gotham City from the Batcave, and tells him that if he finds the right way over and through the city, he can be back in the cave in under three hours.

Damian is determined to make it in just two hours. All of four minutes in, a woman screams for help.

And he keeps helping, again and again and again, hour after hour after hour. Finally, he makes it home.

Awww :')

A nice version of "The Gauntlet" that we've seen Batman set his Robin's in the past (Well, Dick and Jason, don't think we ever saw Tim's)

Scenes like this make you wonder why he's written as irredeemable. Lack of moral conflict in Damian just makes him a stale character.

On reading this for the first time I thought it was Dick being tested on his first night out as Robin, not Damian.

Dick is the sort who WOULD stop to help everyone, but Damian would be more likely to be the one who DID make it back in two hours, and is really pleased with the result, UNTIL he hears Batman and Alfred's comments and realises that he completely missed the point of the exercise, and goes back out to do it again, and properly.

Ah but he only adopted Batcow AFTER his tenure as DickBat's Robin, when he'd come out of his shell (a bit).

When he first showed up he was all about ruthlessly pragmatic efficiency (like the "beheading the Spook" bit we're not supposed to mention, or thinking the best way to become Robin was by killing Tim in hand to hand combat).

Dick was the first one to see that Damian had a near pathological need for approval and affection, because nobody had ever shown him any before.

So early Damian (which this is) would see it as a race to be beaten, not a series of diversions to be taken, and the fact he HADN'T realised that would be part of his motivation.

To be fair, this is not the main DCU universe. In this universe Superman's best friend is Lex Luthor...as an adult.

Lex never got involved in any crime before Lois died.

This universe has alot of event's different. So this Damian may be different from his main counterpart. I mean heck, Injustice Nightwing sounded like a psycho , while Injustice 2 seems a bit more grounded.

I'm not gonna lie, I'm really missing when Dick and Damian were a team. The inversion of grimdark Batman and lightness Robin was a brilliant move by Morrison. Giving us a Batman who smiled like it was the 1970s while giving us a cold, almost ruthless Robin worked so well, especially as you watch Damian change like Pinocchio into a Real Boy. I still remember the scene with Damian asking Dick if they were still going to be a team when Bruce reappeared. (And now I'm a little sad).

Nightwing is everybody's best big brother, really.

Did you read their recent reunification in Nightwing? Some nice reflections on that part of their history,

I really am slacking behind on some of my posts... must do something about that!

That run was amazing, and I'm not someone who's usually a huge fan of Grant Morrison (nothing against him, I've just never been wowed by his work). Got me right in the big brother/little brother feelings.

This scene is pretty adorable, though. This is exactly how Batman and company should be written.

Yeah, one of the big tragedies in the Injustice story is about how none of the 'heroes' on the Regime side are really too far gone to be pulled back. Heck, Flash and Green Lantern's Injustice 2 story is all about them seeking redemption for what they did on Superman's side. But Wonder Woman just doesn't see the problem with an immortal, all powerful monarch who kills their enemies (which does seem a lot like the Amazons and their gods do things). Cyborg is too angry over the rest of the Titans dying in Metropolis, not realising that most of them are in the phantom zone after they confronted Superman. Superman himself is too scared of what happened to Lois happening again, and believes the Regime is the only way to prevent it. And Damien's relationship with Bruce is too damaged and his pride is too strong for him to back down on opposing Batman.

The story in the Injustice universe I really want to read is Wonder Woman's. She's low-key been responsible for a big part of IJ!Superman's heel turn and is, for some reason, way more martial and violent than the mainstream Diana. There's probably something about her origin that didn't go the same way.
