So you leave out the part immediately after where Volstagg has a lucid moment and is horrified with his actions? It's the entire point of the scene 😂

Is this you're first scan by history_79? This is how they post. Maximum pages, preventing anyone else from posting, most often from the books action sequences.

"Preventing anybody else from posting"? Come the eff on. History is one of our best contributors, and people somehow make it sound bad. If it bothers you that they take the initiative to post comics they like because then they get to pick the pages they liked best, you are very free to post those pages yourself before they do.

Thank you, janegray. History's doing nothing wrong. The rule is 1/3 of an issue (or 4 pages if it's the current issue), and there's no rule that that maximum must be spread amongst more than one person. And the implication that history deliberately posts so as to "prevent" others from doing so is uncalled for.

And you don't confuse a freely offered service with something you are entitled to.

Again, if you disagree with History's choice of pages, nobody is stopping you from posting your own preferred pages first. Hell, it doesn't even have to be a race. Just drop them a pm telling them that you'd very much like to post certain pages from a certain comic and you'll appreciate it if they refrain from posting anything from that issue so you have the spot. There, boom, done.

Look, I've been in this community for over ten years, and at some point it looked like its days were over. Nobody was posting anything anymore, nobody was commenting, it was a freaking ghost town. In that time, a grand total of four posters kept it going almost single-handedly: History, Iconuk, Cyberghostface, and Laughingtree. If it hadn't been for them, the community may very well have not lasted long enough to pick itself up again.

Therefore it really bothers me when people pick on History just because they liked different pages better. Literally nothing stopped the entire rest of the community from posting whichever other pages they preferred first.

You come the eff on. History is prolific, but does not choose good scans. Does not post anything interesting besides fight scenes or pointless diversions. And no, I can't post them before anyone else. I live in Australia and my nearest comic shops is two and a half hours by bus and it's not a very good one. The nearest good one, two buses and four hours. The most concentrated number? Minimum Five hours via combination of train and bus.

In future, please refrain from discussions publicly complaining about other posters. Anybody would feel unwelcome seeing themselves discussed in this way.

If anyone feels that any one single poster is monopolising posting scans from new comics before anyone else has a chance to post the best place to take that problem is to the mods.

Yes. It's setting up an interesting contrast between 616-Mjolnir and 1610-Mjolnir. The former has a much more "equal" relationship with Jane, whereas the latter appears to be straight-up possessing Volstagg.

Query why the Mjolnirs take such different approaches with their hosts. Maybe the 1610-Mjolnir is a product of the Ultimate universe's overall dickishness?

Given it's a recreation of Ultimate Knock-off Mjolnir (*) made by DOOM, that's probably Doom's dickishness rather than Ultimate dickishness showing through.

Or a merger of both.

(* 'cuz Ultimate Comics: Thor showed that the axe-like Mjolnir Ultimate Thor used isn't the Proper Mjolnir, just a man-made lightning generating axe-hammer with a teleporting device built into it Thor named Mjolnir.
... not actually sure where the real one went...)

wait, what is everything you are saying? Ultimates Thor isn't Thor? Or Just doesn't have the real Mjolnir? When did doom make one and why did ultimate thor have it? And if this is that Hammer, by didn't it affect UThor that way?

Date: 2017-07-20 09:14 pm (UTC)
From: [personal profile] scorntx
Uh... okay.
1: Never said Ultimate Thor wasn't Thor.
2: He did have a Mjolnir that looks like the regular Thor's Mjolnir, when he was in Asgard. Then Loki did his Loki thing and Asgard was destroyed. Thor was reborn in 21st century Europe, sans powers, but fortunately the European folks making super-powered folks had made an ionization engine / teleporter, which Thor suggested putting into a hammer, which he called Mjolnir.
3: During Jonathan Hickman's Avengers / New Avengers / Secret Wars run, the Ultimate universe got blown up (also, everywhere else). But Doom had defeated the surprisingly unimportant beings responsible for this and stolen their powers, and used it to save some realities before they got blown up, the Ultimate universe included.
In his capacity as tyrannical God Emperor, Doom created numerous hammers bestowing Thor powers on folk, including a version of Ultimate Thor's hammer. Then Secret Wars happened.
Doom's version of Ultimate Mjolnir survived and fell through into the main universe. That's the one Volstagg found, and the one that's turned him into the War Do-... War Thor.

All very simple, no?

The knuckle spikes are a bit over the top I feel.

Still. Some years ago I made a post at another site about how, as obesity rates rise, Volstagg was being treated more and more as a serious character. There was that quest when he fought the dragon, I have half forgotten it now, and his strength stunned his companions, Much like the sight of his penis left Sif speechess a while ago.

his would seem to complete his journey from Falstaff-knockoff to serious character.

I've had the fan musing before that Norse gods often go by many names, and Volstagg might be another name for Frey. Yes, we've seen another Frey briefly, but Volstagg is a much better fit.

Incidentally, so this is what we get when we add the power of Thor to an ÅsgĂ„rdian god?

I've long felt that Volstagg wasn't hanging with the Warriors Three and Thor just because he's funny. I'm guessing he's a classic example of someone you'd underestimate until it's too late.

Agreed. I think he's always been the guy who only looks like comic relief on the surface. Also, I can't help noticing that "serious character" seems to come with a side of abs (or at least artistic emphasis on the muscles), so I'm not sure the shift has anything to do with societal trends.

I know it was supposed to be serious but...

"What is that beard made of!"
"RAGE"

that's gonna be my new line....

also that Enchantress scene is hilarious, the hammer won't come off...

(then it went to straight up tragic) "Rage and pain and fire and the blood of children)...

I dunno, I don't think you can write a line about a beard being made of rage and not be aware of how gloriously over-the-top it is.

Reading the issue, I think it's meant to be taken as read that the "War Thor" hammer turns you into a '90s anti-hero archetype. The only thing keeping the dude from lurking on top of gargoyles in the rain is the setting.

I know what you mean. When I first saw that line, I literally laughed out loud at how ludicrous it was. But then, as it ever does, my mind wanders and I wondered, is this rage beard of Thorstagg's a Hulk Beard, or a Red Lantern Beard? Or some freakish hybrid?

...And then I came to the realization that I miss my own beard. Dammit.

My cautious optimism after the last issue seems to have crashed against the rocks of XTREME reality. Volstagg as a rage-filled 90s anti-hero who effortlessly beats down two heavy-hitters to show how tough he is? Ugh.

OTOH, Volstagg did briefly come to his senses, so perhaps more of his personality will come through as he adjusts to his boosted power level. I'm still holding out hope War Thor won't suck, although less hope than before. :/
