Gamorra is oddly committed to taking the shield down and getting back to Earth, here. Would anyone who's read the issue like to say why?

I've been hesitant to really leave any comments regarding the more recent GotG stuff (save for a quick set of thoughts on the second film), but I do have to say this: I HATE this version of Yondu.

His tendency to manipulate, his arrogance, his vicious streak... It feels so contrary to what I remember back with the classic Guardians. And yes, I know, those Guardians and these ones do not share the same universe or timeline, but the point stands. When you take one of my favorite characters from that team, and transition a version of him into this? I'm sorry, I cannot back it. It feels insulting.

To be fair, they explicitly say (Well, as explicitly as Groot gets) that that's a different Yondu.

He's not another version of the original Yondu, he's an ancestor.

Except this isn't the same Yondu you're talking about, they straight up say it's a different person.

In fact, this Yondu is an ancestor of the the heroic one.

I am very well aware that this is not the same Yondu I am familiar with from the moment he first appeared in the modern Guardians. Yes, I was aware that this Yondu was the ancestor to the classical version. But you kinda missed the point of my prior comment. When you've read the classic Guardians and you see that Yondu being a honest, loyal and spiritual figure and then go to the modern Guardians and see this Yondu being an egotistical asshat... That's what insults me. It's more or less sullying a name to me.

And to be perfectly frank, this was kinda the reason I was hesitant to do much posting regarding GotG or even in general, since I know that my phrasing can be misunderstood.

"I am Groot?"
"No, that's a different Yondu who first appeared in MARVEL SUPER HEROES #18."
"I am Groot."
"Right, with the 'original' Guardians of the Galaxy from a different future that kept coming back to our present."
"I am Groot?"
"No, a different Vance Astro, but he met our Vance Astro. You're thinking of the one who almost married Firestar."
"I am Groot!"
"I'll never forget Butter Rum either, big guy."

That Vance Astro was on this team, actually! Until Bendis took over and suddenly everything was MOVIE GUARDIANS.

Maybe, but having Bendis didn't help, especially since he admitted he wasn't familiar with the previous GotG books. His GotG book wasn't his best work in anycase.

Ehhhh. Disappointing :(

I LOVE Yondu and his messed up relationship with Peter in the movies. It's seriously one of my favourite parts of the MCU, which is full of stuff I utterly adore.

But the comics' take on the MCU version of Yondu is just plain pathetic. He doesn't have 1/10 of the charisma.

Present day Yondu anyway, the original Yondu from the future is far more heroic.

Yeah, but as you said, original!Yondu and comics' take on MCU! Yondu are two completely different characters. So a good portrayal of original!Yondu has nothing to do with the portrayal of this other Yondu here.

And anyway, it's not a matter of heroism to me. It's a matter of charisma, competence, and personality layers.

In fairness, I didn't care much for MCU Yondu until partway through GotG2, so I'm okay with him being so unlikable here -- for the moment.

Which I guess makes some degree of sense. I mean, if you're going to follow the movies this closely, why not give him a similar course of character development, especially if you've only just introduced him?

But Yondu had good 3D characterization in the first movie too. It was more subtle, but it was definitely there.

Like, supposedly this guy is totally selfish and greedy. But when he finds out that Peter scammed him out of billions of space dollars, his reaction is to grin widely. It's pretty obvious he is proud of Peter for outsmarting him, apparently so much so that it cheerfully makes up for him missing out on becoming a billionaire.

Then there are all the other bits. Peter mentions that Yondu was the closest to a family he ever had. Drax, who cuts straight to the chase and is entirely motivated by love for his family, takes one look at Yondu and Peter and immediately assumes they are father and son. The other Ravagers openly challenge Yondu, despite his well-known reputation as a homicidal one-man army, because "you always were soft on [Peter]." Said homicidal one-man army turns around when he thinks he has to execute Peter for betraying them, refusing to look at Peter's death, and gets talked out of killing him very easily. And in the end it's outright stated that Yondu refused to give Peter to his father, which the other Ravagers imply was a well-paid job, because "the guy was a jerkass."

Yondu's characterization in the second movie wasn't out of the blue, everything had already been heavily hinted in the first movie.

Oh, I agree. I'm just saying that if Marvel is trying to faithfully mimic what the MCU Yondu had going on, I wouldn't expect to like him at this point -- I'd expect him to grow into that as the layers are eventually peeled back as they were in the movies.

I'm just hoping that's their plan here, and what we see isn't just what we get.

Good points on Yondu I especially liked how Yondu always gave Peter a way of coming home to The Ravengers. He places a bounty explicitly saying Alive, kept his room the way it is, and brought a Zune from Earth just for Peter.
