Can't say I'm surprised Wilson would take this approach to downplaying the Islamic extremism behind terrorist attacks. The Manchester bomber Salmon Abedi didn't snap, he was a hardcore religious nutjob preaching about Muhammad in the streets.

Salman Abedi's background pretty much tracks with what is being described here:

Salman Abedi: How Manchester attacker turned from cannabis-smoking dropout to Isis suicide bomber

"The 22-year-old was remembered as a “fun guy” who drank, took drugs and possibly had links with local gangs before appearing increasingly religious as his radicalisation deepened."

That is pretty much exactly what this book is describing a normal guy who felt increasingly othered until he was snapped up and radicalised by a bunch of "vultures" who twisted his beliefs and isolation to their own purposes. By focusing only on the end point of his journey and ignoring the start you really only play into the hands of those vultures and make it easier for them to radicalise others.

Indeed I once read a good article (I forget where) where they compare this to someone becoming a "born again christian" e.g. they feel they've been neglecting their faith so now they must be the MOST religious.

And one of the main ways the "vultures" use this, is with the particular parts of the Quran that state that "past sins" will be forgiven if you commit martyrdom and kill "non-believers".
(They even use loop-holes to justify the deaths of other bystanders who are believers.)

Yeah.

I'm not religious, but I grew up in a religious household. Not crazy Satan-is-on-TV religious, but we read Bible passages nightly and went to Church every Sunday. Pretty much all of us acknowledged that there were parts of Christianity that didn't make sense-- people didn't actually live to 900+ years back when, God didn't literally try to kill Moses just after convincing him to come back to Egypt, etc.

Then there were the recently converted, who insisted that every single thing in the Bible was 100% correct, even the stuff that made no damn sense. E.g., Angels were knocking up humans and making superhumans (Genesis 6:1-4). (Wait, what?!) In retrospect, the converts were obviously signaling their hardcore loyalty to their new tribe, in a way that us "natives" never felt compelled to do. And I distinctly remember my own conversion to secularism, when I obnoxiously felt compelled to tell everyone God didn't exist, for similar reasons.

The new converts are always the most dangerous, because they have the most to prove.

How did Stan Lee miss that one?

By day he is Aaron Adamson, humble gardener of New York City's parks authority. By night he is" The Heretical Half-Angel!!!!" locked into eternal battle with his evil half-sister Lilith Littleapple also known as "The Seductive Serpent-Girl" .

I am joking, but I'd also not be surprised if someone with a more encyclopedic knowledge of comics then me turns up and tells me that, yes, Stan genuinely did try this.

Actually, that tends to not be the case. The people who join ISIS or whatever terrorist group is a-jour tend to be recent converts, or people who haven't had much involvement with their faith who connects with it. It's been noted that eg. people who move to another country (study was looking at women who moved from indonesia to china) or from rural to urban areas (IE: they leave behind their usual social institutions, including their faith) Notably these indonesian women didn't connect with the actual existing islamic groups or study-circles (or if they did, they dropped out of them fairly quickly)

In this they are very similar to other terrorist groups (eg. the recruits to the Red Brigades, or the RAF, or any other similar group) often being actively involved in the "faith" tends to be a minus for recruiters: It tends to mean you have a certain buffer against indoctrination. (both because you are familiar enough to notice when things become way out of mainstream, and, less charitably, because you already have a different set of indoctrinated values)

Who are Redhead and Helmet?

Date: 2017-07-30 05:45 am (UTC)
From: [personal profile] long_silence
Redhead is basic Becky. She was part of the youth group that Ms. Marvel was working with during CW2 for future profiling until one of the incidents hit too close to home for Kamala and she rebelled. I think her codename is Lockdown, and now she's joined Hydra

The guy in the mask is Discord. They haven't revealed who he is yet but the fact that they're hiding his identity probably means he's someone Kamala knows.

Apparently the new mayor of New Jersey City (who is working for Hydra) wants to get rid of all of the super powered people in the city. Going so far as to revoke Aamir's citizenship because he exhibited powers once.

I have no clue how a municipal mayor is able to revoke citizenship since that's a federal thing, and it seems to be going against what Hydra is doing in literally every other book which is sending Inhumans to concentration camps and sending mutants to New Tian.

Becky was already antagonistic with Kamala after Kamala rebelled against the Carol Cadets for going far beyond any legal authority they actually had.

I think they're hinting that Discord is someone that Ms. Marvel's adventures in New Jersey have harmed in some way that she hadn't considered.

....so, this is pretty obvious foreshadowing that Discord is Bruno, right?

I mean, seems pretty familiar with Ms. Marvel's adventures, has the weird technoband over the right arm which was injured in the blast...

Edited to Add - and checked the issue - the left hand was injured, but I see the picture with the band over the left hand knuckles so the theory still holds.

That does seem to be the obvious conclusion

But there was recently an issue about Bruno's adventures in Wakanda, and while he wanted to get better, he hadn't gone full supervillain.
And no matter how bitter he is, I just can't see him betraying Kamala and having Aamir deported
