…Was this really necessary? Blackout clearly wasn't a willing participant of the scheme. Was there no other way of stopping his Darkforce thing, other than literal bullet to the head?

It's not Maria Hill as written by Nick Spencer unless she does something pointlessly evil and / or stupid.

I have no idea why so many writers seem to love her. Or rather why that love always translates into making her do as many reader alienating action as they can cram into the page count.

It wasn't pointless, it was they had to do to save NYC from the Darkforce dimension or is Blackout somehow more important than saving the people that are constantly in danger of Demon attacks?

Besides, Blackout has died before, so pfff.

It's not even Spencer at this point. Getting 'good' things done in the most morally abhorrent and needlessly lethal way possible is just Hill's characterisation now.

I swear, she could solve world hunger or successfully stop global warming and she'd still somehow find a way to make them morally reprehensible.

"Hey everyone, I solved world hunger!" "And how did you do that Maria?" "Here's a hint: I also solved overpopulation!" "God dammit Maria."

"Hey, I fixed Global Warming!" "Let's hear it Maria." "I had my scientists build a machine that cools the Earth by consuming the souls of those who disagree with my opinions!" "For fuck's sake Maria."

I have a vague memory of the aperture to the Darkforce Dimension being literally inside his head, so I'm not sure there was any alternative that could be guaranteed not to be reversible by the bad guys in the timeframe she probably has to take him out.

In Hill's mind? Yes, it is the only way.

This is the second time Blackout has died. The first time was during Roger Stern's "Under Seige" Avengers story.

You mean he keeps… blacking out?

Yes, I know, exit's that way…

I'd say Blackout was in a better place, but HYDRA made him use the Darkhold before he went, so.

Yeah, not much likelihood of that turning out well for him. If I recall correctly, the first time Dr. Strange used that lore it ended up getting him turned into a werewolf and Satanna Hellstrom had to sacrifice her life to save his soul from being claimed.

I find myself wondering how much the writers get a say when 'their' characters appear in other writer's books. Because there's a few scenes in the Captain America issue that indicate that AI Tony really wants to be flesh and blood, and I suspect that Bendis may have had some influence in dropping those there to lay some foreshadowing for drama when the real Tony Stark comes back.

Is it just me, or is this actually starting to get pretty decent? The heroes aren't moping anymore, they've starting to make some meaningful headway...

I'm also noticing, over the last few issues, that the narration and characters have gone out of their way to emphasize that Cap's been altered and that this isn't his true state.
