'When you're likely to live forever, perceptions are going to change, and sometimes drastically. Some of the readers who took time to respond to the series were apparently not ready for my musings! There was a ripple of outrage when Bruce Wayne became involved with, and eventually married to, Lara Wayne, his "great granddaughter". Many people seemed to stick on the language, and overlook the fact that Bruce and Lara had no blood relationship.' - John Byrne

John, that's the explanation bad animes use for why the main characters sister is part of the harem. It doesn't work there and it doesn't work now.

See, I dislike the idea that 'it's personal' makes someone fight harder than 'because it's the right thing to do.'

Superman can fight *really hard* because it's the right thing to do.

Perhaps something to consider

Let's hope you never learn the difference. It is different.

Lemme phrase it another way: For a lot of people, going after a kid/innocent person/whatever makes it 'personal,' even if they've never met the person before.

This is just in, adoptive relationships don’t count! It’s cool to bone a much younger relative who grew up seeing you as a great-grandparent, go hog wild!

I forgot how gross this series got...

Issues of adoption aside, great-granddaughter isn't actually very close a relationship normally speaking. The entire immortality thing screws up the potential for that a lot, of course.

Genetically it would be the equivalent to... Second cousin or something? Socially I have no idea how a family of immortals would even relate to each other.

If he had been introduced to her once she was an adult herself, I’d have no issue with it. Even having grown up around him as a close member of the family, like in the comic, I guess after a long enough time had passed she would no longer relate to him the same way...it all depends really on whether immortal memory is plastic or set in youth the way ours is.

Regardless, what I really disliked was Byrne’s comment, which I think falls into the camp of treating the wrongs of incest as inbreeding rather than rape. Blood often has nothing to do with family power structures.
