'One of the complaints the Byrne Bashers like to dust off from time to time is that I have a "fetish" about young girls crushing on older men. In a forty five year career, this is something I have done a grand total of four times with Mac and Heather Hudson, Lana and Superman in GENERATIONS, Rita Farr and Cliff Steele, and Reed and Sue Richards. And that last one was set in place by Stan and Jack. As fetishes go, not much to write home about.' - John Byrne

September 22, 2925:

Finally, something neat: Here's all twelve Generations III covers side-by-side.

Do you spot what Byrne did there?

---

And so concludes the Generations saga, spanning 2 mini-series, 1 maxi-series, 1 one-shot, and 1 short story.
What'd you all think?

okay, I'm staring at the covers and I think that he thinks there's some connection to them, like issue five has orangish smoke drifting towards the cover and issue six has the mushroom cloud. But I don't think they actually like up properly or anything so I'm guessing it's something that is not actually there

Byrne has put Darkseid's face in the combined covers. I kind of remember Byrne getting frustrated by people not seeing it. On one message board, :I don't see Darkseid's face" became a recurring joke.

There's one eye behind Supes on # 7, and the other eye behoind WW on # 5

Someone's drawn an outline on Jayble's forum at

The problem, I think, is the colouration - if it were all similar colour palettes the shapes would be better defined.

His defence would be pretty strong if not for the comment about dating someone 40 years his junior -at 58.

Still, I must admit that his storytelling craft is pretty solid.

Constantly has young girls crushing on older men? I'd hardly call four times "constantly." I mean, if you eat roast beef four times in your life, one would hardly say that person constantly eats roast beef. No, it would be a rare, nay, freak occurrence.

Well, if you only ate forty meals in your lifetime, that might not appear nearly as rare. I don't particularly subscribe to the notion that Byrne has some sort of fetish about this, just that I think he doesn't really get how the optics on that trope (which might have once been more innocent seeming) are now pretty squicky.

I mean, the teen Lana demanding a kiss from Superman is kind of off-putting to me, personally, but YMMV. In general, Byrne had better than average female characters along his career (at least compared to other writers concurrently). Sue becoming the Invisible WOMAN happened on his watch, iirc, and the She Hulk become a much more important character under him, as well.

This is true. His work with Lois, Lana, and Maggie Sawyer was also good to great, and definitely a huge improvement over even late Silver Age material.

I was paraphrasing a joke from Red Dwarf.

I went through Byrne's track record on women years ago, and it's not great. I don't think he's a misogynist - I just think he's limited as a writer and doesn't take the time to seriously examine his shortcomings. He has a habit of repeating certain things (the weird teen crush thing, putting women/children in peril, or the infamous Byrne Hold) to the point where they become a cliche.

I can't believe I missed that joke reference.

I don't think you're wrong. He definitely does that sort of thing. I started out enjoying Next Men, for example, and then it got...Byrne.

Younger girls crushing on older men is perfectly healthy and natural. It's when the older men start doing something about it, or crushing on other younger girls, that we have to ask some questions.

Wasn't Mattie Franklin one of Byrne's creations?

I seem to recall her having a thing for Peter Parker. She was a teenager and he was an adult.

So that's at least 5 times.
