I think Jack Kirby would approve.

I hope so. Kirby hated fascists... But he also hated hippies.

I don't know about that. He created the Forever People

I was more on the idea that, to Jack Kirby, this is what Comics should be. he was of the idea that comics should embrace politics and be out-spoken about political issues.
To quote him:
“I think you fellas should think of comics in terms of drugs, in terms of war, in terms of journalism, in terms of selling, in terms of business. And if you have a viewpoint on drugs, or if you have a viewpoint on war, or if you have a viewpoint on the economy, I think you can tell it more effectively in comics than you can in words. I think nobody is doing it. Comics is journalism. But now it’s restricted to soap opera.”

That's a fantastic quote! Could you link me to the interview/article from whence it comes, please? I'd love to read more of Kirby's thoughts on this, given how comics inspired me to become a journalist.

apparently, he said so in a california convention. can't find the one convention, and can't find one specific article about it.

I think one far surpassed the other.

Kirby on his young self:

"The only real politics I knew was that if a guy liked Hitler, I’d beat the stuffing out of him and that would be it."

And Stan Sakai once said he heard a lot of war stories from Jack, but they always ended with the incident of him killing four Nazis. "He hated nazis."

Hating hippies? What do you base that on? In addition to JLbarnett's Forever People example, there were also the benevolent Hairies from his Jimmy Olsen run. Kirby's work's always leaned progressive, in multiple senses of the word.

I might be mixing up hippies with anti-war protestors. If, indeed, Kirby really did have a problem with either group.

There was just this bit from Thor 154, July 1968. Thor tells some hippies to LIVE!

It reminds me a little of a clip from Dragnet.

I feel like this issue must have been in the pipeline for several months, because just having this without some equivalent left wing counter protesting is ignoring the reality of what's happening

Hell, having Trump supporters pulling down statues at this point is almost ironic.

I disagree that it is ironic.
Even if you want to argue some generic statues meant to be racist and do not actually honor some real person (they were literally cheaply made out of a catalogue, that's why they are so easy to take down) is the same as taking down the statues of a real person who was alive just a few years back, you still have them trashing places like mosque and the like.

Literal graves and holocaust memorials have been vandalized long before people began taking what, even the descendants of the people they (supposedly) try to honor think, should have been long ago.

hell, the point is not that removing statues is bad.
THe point is they are removing the statue as to erase that "someone who had the wrong skin color" was given some sort of respect.

Well it's a title no one really reads anymore (the original SD died last issue and no one noticed) so Erik Larsen can pretty much do whatever he wants at this point. He got away with actual porn on a variant cover (albeit polybagged) and there was no fuss.

This is so on the nose it makes Nick Spencer look extremely subtle by comparison. But I kinda get the point.

The thing is, Spencer THINKS he's being subtle, but he's being super transparent about it. This isn't pretending to be anything other than exactly what it is. It's not pulling any punches in terms of making it about an analogue or stand-in, it's being totally on the nose about it's opinions, period.

I'm not particularly a fan, but given Savage Dragon's fanbase is a lot like Dave Sim's Cerberus fanbase used to be, a small dedicated group keeping the title going. It currently sells, what, 4000 copies a month these days? A far cry from it's heyday, but clearly enough to keep it going, I guess.

I think SD is able to stay in print because Erik Larsen is one of the people running Image.

I don't think Spencer's trying to be subtle at all and I'm puzzled anyone would think he is. Nobody has a CEO villain say lines like "This country needs to be put back on track, and I'm just the supervillain in a snake suit to do it" to be subtle.

The only amusing thing about this is that idea of Trump supporters demanding a wall be built to keep out frigging ALIENS.
