Chronicling the Rise and Fall to Rise Again of the Cyborg Superman. You'll find his appearances from Hunter/Prey, Hank and Hal in the Road to Marvel Universe (Silver Surfer/Green Lantern), and Trial of Superman all in here.

DIAL UPPERS BEWARE!!

So the Cyborg Superman's journey take's him to Superman's worse nightmare in Hunter/Prey (which is more than 50 pages each): a rematch with Doomsday. But onto where we last left Doomsday:

The ship is towed back to Apokolips and given it's history of giving great riches to Darkseid he wants to know what happened to it. Not soon after opening the ship Doomsday make's his presence known and begins destroying anything in his path:

I have to admit. I really think the supermullet was a nice fit for Hank. He so make's it work better than Clark did.

Anyway, Darkseid take's on Doomsday and loses (only for being idiotic in walking around the area he turend into ash thinking his foe vanquished). Henshaw raids Darkseid's castle when guess who show's up?

People just don't learn. Never EVER turn your back on the Cyborg Superman.

I have to admit I really dig Jurgen's art here. Other than the Death of Superman issue he was at the top of his form here. I mean just look at the little details he gives the Cyborg Superman's machine half. Just awesome. Which is again on display here when Hank uses his technopath powers:

After saving the people of Apokolips from a missle strike Henshaw unleashes onto the food storage areas, Superman pays Hank a visit with Round 2 erupting:

Ouch and OWNED.

Superman is all O_O at the display of power from Darkseid and is all, "YOU KILLED HIM!" And Seid is all, "So?" Where was this remorse during the end of last time you fought Hank, Supes?

Honestly I heartily suggest picking up Hunter/Prey. It's an awesome round two match with Supes/Doomsday that should have been the final chapter with Doomy never appearing again besides the great Jurgens' art. But oh well...

Just right after this event Zero Hour erupts with Hal trying to be god with time. It's another Dan Jurgens comic which surprises me the dude cranked out so much during this time period both writing and drawing.

Alas though not a mere six months later Superman revisits Apokolips in Superman #104 with the end result pissing Darkseid off enough to do this:

Though I think Dan had to finish up this plot point given not soon after Darkseid met his end in a New Gods book at that time and was "dead" until the Genesis event.

Not soon after Hank show's up in Green Lantern/Silver Surfer with his first actual meeting with Hal:

This meeting is actual cannon given the next time Hal meets Hank he references this encounter. Though not surprising given that both books where written by Ron Marz. Like I said before in my last installment, this period Hank went by just "The Cyborg" given Vic Stone dropped the identity for another during this period. Honestly, I wasn't too fond of the name change. The name change restricted to what Hank was doing, being a mockery of Superman.

In anycase, it wasn't soon after this the Cyborg Superman made his next big appearance with the Superman event: "The Trial of Superman". The event took place at the same time during Underworld Unleashed, which is why the heroes thought he was Neron's objective. Nah, he was out in space being tried for Superdickery.. er really the genocide of the entire Kryptonian race. Not a fair charge since we all know him to be innocent. Somehow Superman escapes the Tribunal, who send their best hunter, the Cyborg Superman after him.

HUH?

Given they have no idea of the genocidal crimes he's committed. Well Superboy, Eradicator, Supergirl (Matrix), Steel, and the Alpha Centurion (what the hell happened to that guy?) all leave Earth to land Supes a hand. Unfortnatly, in Superman #107 (yep just three issues since being freed via Darkseid) they run into Hank:

The next part of the crossover Action Comics #717, the Cyborg and Superman's pathes cross again. I was thinking of scanning this, but it was either this or how the heck Doomsday ended up in Apokolips. I chose that. Henshaw ends up catching Superman after the later saves Hank from being fried by alien machinery.

When we role onto the next part of this event, Henshaw betrays the Tribunal doing what else? Try to make a new War World.

The Centurion escapes Henshaw's trap, freeing the Super Family. They try to rescue Superman from being executed, but Hank again pops up trying to stall them:

Of course Superman escapes the execution, fights Henshaw and defeats him (beating him via an old Greek myth by denying him access to the ground yeah it's as corny as it sounds). Still the Tribunal aren't impressed and arrest everyone now stepping up Supes execution again. Which leads us to the final part after thinking Superman dead and executed they set they're sights on the Cyborg Superman:

The head Tribunal smacks his fellow member for dare questioning him. Superman show's up alive challenging the Prime Judge whose insanity is stand more exposed as his fellow judges depose him and judge him guilty. Not soon after the Prime is executed by a guard. The remaining judges switch their punishment for Supes pretty much continue fighting for the good and atone for the crime his ancestor committed. As for Henshaw:

I have to admit that was a fitting end to the character. But not surprisingly, the Cyborg Superman survives this via help (Hal saves the creep wanting the personal satisfaction of killing the fiend himself) during Final Night.

All of this happened in a three year span. That's a TON of appearances for one villain. Though that was Henshaw's fate alas since his appearance. Every year an appearance. Every year he seemingly met his demise until the next year or less appearing very much alive.

Heck, just right after Final Night during his supposed "end" he appeared in another crossover DC had with another company, Darkhorse with Superman vs the Terminator. In the tale, Superman finds himself protecting John Connor while being transported to the future via Skynet and the Cyborg Superman's doing.

But alas I'm making this out wa cooler than it ought to be. The mini was bad. Really bad. Hell it had Hank on a motorbike with one of those side cars for his female Terminator side-kick. Not to mention, Henshaw's hideout is a low rent apartment. What is he Superboy Prime?! But I digress if you really want me to post these scans I will. Though if I do it'll be a little longer since I never scanned or saved them compared to all these scans.

In any case, I apologize for moving "Final Night" to the next entry. I didn't realize how scan heavy I was already at until I looked at the previews to this.

Though when I post my next installment, I have a question to ask to perplexing question. Did Geoff Johns retcon Hank's appearances from after "Final Night" until "Revenge of the Green Lanterns"?

Because it sounds pretty much like it in GL vol. 4 #12 when Hank explains to Hal how he became Grandmaster to the Manhunters. Regardless, next installment besides "Final Night", three appearances he has all in one year, some various appearances of Henshaw in the later half of the 90s and 00s. Not to mention the meeting of the ages, Hank visiting the Marvel Universe again and meeting the Fantastic Four. Wackiness will ensue.

I think we'd have a lot of fun with that XD...

It's weird to see Silver Surfer tumbling on his board to avoid hits. It's weird.

Wiki says that the black-hole execution was how he made it to the Marvel Universe, is this true?

Well I guess we can always count on Hal to screw everything up for everybody.

Man, I only just realized: Superboy Prime is to the 00's as Cyborg Superman is to the 90's.

Both are a twisted reflection of Superman, both are at the center of a massive comic crossover introducing them (although both had existed as minor character earlier), both get set up as this unstoppable force only to get knocked down and brought back every six months.

All the more reason I just wish (ever since SINESTRO CORPS: SUPERMAN PRIME where Emoboy called Cyborg, "Mr. Henshaw") Hank and Prime would go off and go on fishing trips and whatnot, have some father/son bonding experiences. It'd do them both a multiverse of good.

I really wished we saw some interaction between the Sinestro Corps big hitters. A suicidal Kryptonian cyborg, a crazy pre-Crisis Kryptonian, Space Hitler, the embodiment of fear, and the embodiment of the Anti-matter Universe? Sitcom material right there.

Just two things.

1: Dan Jurgens is kind of crap at drawing aliens and alien technology, which makes most of his Superman work kind of dull visually.

2: About the only justification for keeping Doomsday around as a badguy was that he was someone Superman actually feared, or at least hesitated when he encountered, and that he was way powerful. So of course we had to have that horrible story during Last Laugh when Supes casually admitted he'd never be scared of Doomsday again and then just punched him out.

Fuck the what now.

1.) Slightly OT, I think Jurgens is at his best when he's inked by Sienkiewicz. I was just thinking about it the other day, and man, those two polar opposite styles really complimented each other beautifully the few times they've worked together.

2.) And thus we have yet another "... goddammit, Loeb" moment.

I'm sure I've seen it before, but for the life of me, I can't recall what he did! I'm crying already.

I dunno, is it the toy amalgam version? Because man, whoever thought "Hey let's team up Cyborg and TOYMAN" was a great idea needs to be shot. And if that person was Loeb, all the more reason.

I'm sorry to bring this down to a superficial level but... am I the only one who get's highly weirded out when I see Clark Kent with a mullet? I grew up watching Christopher Reeve as Superman! Superman is meant to have perfectly combed hair with only the single curl at the front, not long flowing locks!
