Dark Nights: Metal #1

'There are beats in “The Button” that will be referenced, and there are things coming in this story that I think also look back at some of the stuff [there]. They’re about different things in the DCU, but are parts of the same universe. They make sense happening together. We worked hard to both give each other enough room, and also to make sure we didn’t feel isolated from one another, and the stories were all part of a big plan. I hope fans see that with DC right now, one of the joys being a creator here is that there is an uber-plan for us right now, between what we did with Rebirth, what we’re doing with Metal, the stuff coming after that I can’t talk about — you’ll hear very soon about stuff coming soon after. There really is a big plan for over the next two years. You can say, “I see it from here, now I can play within these structures.” Geoff has been great about that. He had me out for a weekend, and he was just like, “Let’s put everything up on a whiteboard, and we’ll talk story.”' - Scott Snyder

Sonofabitch, did DC steal a plot point from STRANGER THINGS.

That's not a question, that's a statement of fact.

I love the "see the 90s" comment about Aquaman's harpoon-hand.

But... how does Barry remember that? Wasn't he utterly, totally not around for Crisis reasons during the whole of the nineties?

You know? the endless are so sparingly used by DC that, having Dream appear and say "hey, things are so bad that I came to warn you" ACTUALLY makes it feel like there are high stakes here.

I still stand by my previous observation about this event(?) - it feels like an Elseworlds story taking place in the pages of Heavy Metal magazine.

I've never trusted that map since it split Dream and Nightmare into two different places, when Morpheus would view them as the same place.

But it's always nice to see Will Payton, the Starman of the 1980's, get some recognition.

well, considering the nature of Dream's Realm, couldn't both be true?

I think that's my point, Dream embodies dreams, ALL dreams, good ones and nightmares and everything in between are the same to him, it's the same Realm... so why have two completely separate worlds for them, split into good and bad ones?

Ah, but who says the two worlds can't be linked, two halves of one whole?

Gaiman did have the Dreaming accessed through two gates, one of horn and one of ivory. It's possible that the mapmakers assumed they lead to different places rather than different aspects of the same place?

I am truly wondering hoping Starman will appear more in this event.

I LOVE the idea that an immortal with 1000s of years of prep-time is still just barely a match for Batman.

I super love Superman just rolling his eyes at Batman's bullshit

Technically, isn't Daniel still new to this game? He might have access to all of Morpheus' memories and experience, but that doesn't mean they can come to him effortlessly.

Daniel is new, but Dream is not... it's sort of like the Doctor, there may be a new face, but they are still the same being underneath, the skills are the same, only the outlook might be different.

Hey, lego_joker, what are your thoughts on Metal so far? Even if you're not reading it, what do you think based on the pages you've seen? I disagree with your Bat-opinions as oft as not, but they're always an interesting perspective.

Do I know you from TV Tropes or something? I can't even remember the last time we talked on this comm...

Anyways, most comics published after 2011 give me hives, so I stay well away, and... I'm not particularly sold on this, even if I do have something of a weak spot for the Endless. Most of the artists who did Sandman were guys who wouldn't be caught *dead* on a superhero book, which gave the Endless a decidedly ethereal, offbeat feel; putting them on the drawing-board of a conventional superhero artist like Capullo just feels wrong.

Story-wise, I'm just hoping Dream won't job *too* badly to whatever Big Universe-Ending Danger they've chosen to headline this crossover. But after that whole "JLA gets Jokerized" arc Snyder put out a while back, they're not especially high hopes.

I can't recall if we've ever even spoken before. I only know your opinions through reading your scans daily posts and comments. I was curious as to how you felt about the whole Barbatos destiny thing as an addition to the mythos, more so than Dream's appearance, which I'd guess will only be a minor role when all is said and done.

Also, have you been checking out the recent Bane mini? Between the Dixon writing and Nolan art, I'd think it right up your alley.

IIRC, Daniel Hall is/was the son of Hippolyta ‘Lyta’ Trevor-Hall and Hector Hall. And Hector Hall was the son of Carter Hall (and Shiera Hall).

Which would mean (this) Dream is (in a way) the grandson of Carter Hall.

I do think we will hear more and possibly see more of Carter as this series goes on.

It would not surprise me at all to find out he and Daniel are still somehow connected.
