One of the series that I'm most eager to read each month when it comes out is Mariko Tamaki's Hulk. The first arc, Deconstructed, was a slow burner, but it was bloody brilliant. The art by Nico Leon allowed some good body and face acting, and it was a book that looked at how people respond to setbacks. I loved it, for reasons that I'm finding hard to articulate just now.

The arc that's just finished, Let Them Eat Cake has struggled a bit. Part of that is because of the artists. Not that they're bad (though they certainly aren't Leon's equal), but there's so many of them
7 - Georges Duarte
8 - Georges Duarte
9 - Julian Lopez (Quite a deep shadowed, Deodato Jr style)
10 - Francesco Gaston/ Julian Lopez (and they are very, very different styles. It's a jarring change that happens halfway through the book)
And coming up
11 - Sebastian Carillo
159 (I know) - Jahnoy Lindsay (As seen in Uncanny Avengers)

IT's tough to establish an identity for a book when half of the creative team is in so much flux. It's a shame, as the title launched with such a strong look under Nico Leon.

The end of #10 does at least promise something interesting for future issues, rather than just the mystery of who will be the artist.

Hulk/She-Hulk has been such a mediocre, underwhelming title. The fact that second arc undermines almost all of the tragic and character-focus stuff of the first, while having inconsistent to poor artwork didn't help matters.

Agreed. Not crazy about the writing or the art.

She Hulk up til this year had the worst art imaginable. Charles Soule's run just wasn't good.

I absolutely adore the first arc. It got a lot of flak from the pacing and the monstrous shape of the Hulk form, while all along I was like, "but the pacing and the monstrous form are the point!! Definitely one of my favorites of the year.

The second arc really ruined things. Jen's trauma, so carefully portrayed, vanished unresolvedly in a puff of smoke, the pacing went back to popcorn superhero, the plot turned to things I don't care about, and her shape went back to being some hot babe. At this point there's no point even in making her grey and metaphorically scarred. Just give her a dab of green and call her She-hulk again.

Just in time, I suspect, for the unsurprising return of the white male Hulk for Legacy…

(Speaking of which, did Secret Empire explain what's up with the Ultimate-accent-speaking-but-not-actually-Ultimate Bruce Banner that Hydra Cap had in captivity?)

same. i really liked the first arc, but the recently concluded one had me quite disappointed.

i wonder if the negative reaction to the first arc led to editorial demanding a "more traditional superhero" story, including a Hellcat team-up.

Wait, I haven't kept up with this book since #5. Did they really just undo everything?

Yeah, this whole arc with the character hasn't excited me in the least. Jen is supposed to be as upbeat as Squirrel Girl or Patsy Walker, not brooding in the rain on a gargoyle next to Daredevil. Maybe the next iteration will have something for me.

Hey, if you're having fun with the current series and its take on Jen more power to you. It's just not my cuppa, that's all. And that whole Civil War II thing with her cousin is another Paul Bunyan-sized axe to grind, but we'll leave that for another day.

I didn't care for the Civil War II storyline, the death of Bruce Banner, and what happened to Jen. That's pretty much it. If you did, that's cool.

To me, MARVEL's weirdest and seemingly worst sounding ideas more often than not end up leading to the best (or at least the most interesting) stories, so I'm usually willing to give them the benefit of the doubt with concepts like Hulk.
