It was from an earlier version of the Superman costume. When creating the Earth-2 Superman, writers went with it in order to differentiate him from a more contemporary Earth-1 Superman.

I recall the story wherein Lois falls off a building and Hocus simply turns and says "HOCUS POCUS! Clark Kent, you will now turn into Superman and save her!"

It involved her turning into Superwoman and a huge amount of dickery in order to get her to be Lois again.

I think it was supposed to be a nod to one of the earlier designs (similar to how Earth-2 Superman used one of the earlier version of the "S" shield)

Lol...with the way Bruce said "It's a lucky thing Bruce and Selina Wayne weren't invited too", I thought for a minute there that the person in the Batsuit was Selina, and was wondering how she managed to pass herself off as Batman :P.

OK, this is pretty cool. It's always nice to give a shout-out to older characters who've been largely forgotten, and there's some great ones here (most of whom I haven't actually READ mind you - hint, hint - but I know about them, 'cause I do my homework). J. Wilbur Wolfingham! Lois's niece Susie, 'the girl who loves to tell whoppers', who once teamed up with Mr. Mxyzptlk! Hocus and Pocus... OK, I have no idea who they are, but it's nice seeing them, anyway. A lovely little glimpse of those halcyon pre-Weisinger days.
