That Minus strip is awesome, I love the little girl at the end. It only barely passes the WW/Flash pic in awesomeness...

Is that really a change to PG's costume?

Child-god with baseball bat! {:']

MADE OF WIN.

[identity profile] jarodrussell.insanejournal.com 2009-08-13 15:02 (UTC)(link)
I'd be only slightly more impressed if it was a guitar instead of a baseball bat, but I'm content to be as impressed as I am. :)

[identity profile] nezchan.insanejournal.com 2009-08-13 16:02 (UTC)(link)
Yes, because doing somebody else's schtick is so much cooler than doing your own.

[identity profile] jarodrussell.insanejournal.com 2009-08-13 16:04 (UTC)(link)
Homage! Homage!

It's a cool scene, don't get me wrong. It just reminded me of FLCL and as a person who likes FLCL more than baseball, the guitar is my preferred weapon when deflecting falling skies. :)

The kind of ruins the whole visual gag the thing was going for, though. I think it would've been lame with a guitar.

[identity profile] jarodrussell.insanejournal.com 2009-08-13 17:04 (UTC)(link)
Spoken like someone who's never seen FLCL. Of course, I say that as someone who's never read that comic regularly, so their might be some equally contextual joke about the bat I'm missing.

No, I've seen and enjoyed FLCL, but infusing it in something that wouldn't call for it in the least isn't cool, it's just hollow referencing.

[identity profile] jarodrussell.insanejournal.com 2009-08-13 17:22 (UTC)(link)
I agree and disagree with you here, though I think I'll have a harder time explaining why I disagree.

I agree because I don't like in-jokes for the sake of in-jokes. When that happens, the joke really does detract from what's going on in the story. So, in that regard, I do agree.

I disagree because I really, really like FLCL, with as much passion as some people feel for baseball. So, I can see the girl on the mountain with a bat, but for all I feel toward baseball, she might as well be holding a tennis racket, a two-by-four, or a broom.

Where as, with a guitar, the joke has another level of context for me, I can see how the bat would give the joke a different context, possibly more universal given that bats are more universally known as "objects for hitting spheroid objects."

Well, I'm not crazy about baseball myself, but when a meteor's coming in pretty much the exact same way as a fastball, the best joke that the most people will appreciate is having Minus ready to receive that pitch the way one would receive any pitch, with a bat.

The heart of the disagreement is, to me, what ol' Grant was getting at in the unfortunately worded quote in your icon. "I like this thing, so more things should be this thing I like, otherwise I will not like them." Aside from fond feelings for FLCL, there is no reason that bat should be a guitar.

[identity profile] jarodrussell.insanejournal.com 2009-08-13 17:49 (UTC)(link)
And if I'd said, "This comic suxxorz cuz it shood be a geetar," you'd be quite right to call me on it, but what I said was: "I'd be only slightly more impressed if it was a guitar instead of a baseball bat, but I'm content to be as impressed as I am. :)" I'm not sure how you get "will not like" out my saying I was impressed by the comic, but I'm impressed that you did.

So we're clear, I'm using your definition of "impressed" in the last half of that sentence, which means I don't like that leap.

Thanks for posting this again--I'd hate to lose any of these! And you added some new ones--Batman and Superman should have picnics a lot!

World's Finest Chicken on the take-out box. I'd eat that!

Kevin Conroy is the very best.

[identity profile] punishermax.insanejournal.com 2009-08-13 15:00 (UTC)(link)
Wow, a non sexist PowerGirl outfit, that's a first.

[identity profile] foxhack.insanejournal.com 2009-08-13 15:07 (UTC)(link)
Kevin Conroy is the man.

V/As are awesome and so underappreciated.

[identity profile] queenanthai.insanejournal.com 2009-08-13 15:17 (UTC)(link)
Dear Kevin Conroy:

I love you and you are awesome.

[identity profile] spooky_lemur.insanejournal.com 2009-08-13 15:49 (UTC)(link)
'Xcuse me, got something in my eye.

All of these are made of win and why I read comics.

[identity profile] jesidres.insanejournal.com 2009-08-13 16:43 (UTC)(link)
Not gonna lie. The Kevin Conroy bit made me tear up with awesome.

[identity profile] lieut_kettch.insanejournal.com 2009-08-13 16:51 (UTC)(link)
I remember when that Minus strip was first posted. Since I was initially unfamiliar with the strip and the title character, I assumed it was a bittersweet portrayal or the innocent, unflagging optimism of children in adversity. I've since read the rest of the archive, and now I realize that this is instead A Crowning Moment of Awesome.

I like the new Peej costume-- especially since it includes elements from Zor-El's (the New Earth one) sigil. And l'il Peej under the Christmas tree is so. fucking. adorable.

[identity profile] taggerung301.insanejournal.com 2009-08-13 17:08 (UTC)(link)
so much happiness on one post!
thank you galateus!

God, that Christmas tree one is adorable!!!!

[identity profile] box_in_the_box.insanejournal.com 2009-08-13 17:32 (UTC)(link)
There is absolutely nothing in this post that I do not love. :)

And coming from me, that's saying something.

[identity profile] box_in_the_box.insanejournal.com 2009-08-13 18:24 (UTC)(link)
I know, right? My Red Lantern rage is powerless against this post!

If I HAD to choose a favorite, though?

[identity profile] box_in_the_box.insanejournal.com 2009-08-13 17:52 (UTC)(link)
As hard as it is to choose a favorite amongst these, it would either be the Kevin Conroy story or the Wonder Woman and Flash cosplayers with the boy, because they are using fandom to make the REAL world a better place.

[identity profile] liarashadowsong.insanejournal.com 2009-08-13 18:55 (UTC)(link)
Thank you for reposting this! I commented the first time around, but I just want to reiterate that I love everything in this post! ^___^ (Especially tiny Batman as he visits other members of the Bat family.)

[identity profile] nymphgalatea.insanejournal.com 2009-08-13 21:15 (UTC)(link)
Tiny Raven & Tiny Powergirl in their little capes shaking their presents are pretty much the most adorable thing on the the planet.

Without an account, I can't start a positive comics post here

[identity profile] brandiweed.livejournal.com (from insanejournal.com) 2009-08-13 21:22 (UTC)(link)
But if you don't mind me piggybacking a post onto this one: Jon Morris' Little Batman cartoons are great (you may need to view LJ entries individually; some of the larger images got cut off when he revamped his LJ design):

The post is a concentrated of pure awesome ♥

[identity profile] halloweenjack.insanejournal.com 2009-08-14 16:38 (UTC)(link)
That con picture reminds me of a Penny Arcade comic where a dad is finishing putting a Flash costume on his kid, and then tells the kid, very solemnly, that now that his secret identity is secure, bad guys can't get to his family. I'd post a link but PA's archive indexing is pretty shitty.
galateus: I'll prove it! Let's cut your Pop in half (Chop Up Pop)

And now, an incredibly late reply!

Hihihihi. SO cute. And fun. Who did the art on the little girls? Wondy is so cute. And Supes! And Dick! And Tim! And Little Batman! I am so bookmarking this for those pervasive bad days.

[identity profile] unknownscribler.insanejournal.com 2009-08-18 04:54 (UTC)(link)
The Optimus Prime in a box pic at the bottom is total win.
