IGN has the cover for Blackest Night : Superman preview.

Now THIS is appropriate, what a super-powered zombie attack should be like. This feels like the horror of having Michael Myers or Jason running around, with people unaware of the deadly danger until it's too late.

Yeah, but even worse, since its an undead Superman.

I think they should rename the Trope Everything's Worse with Bears (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ptitleeyyr8ln8spjv?from=Main.EverythingsWorseWithBears) to everything's lulzierWorse with Superman. Seriously.

That is indeed young comedian/host Simon Amstell from a very amusing clip shown to humiliate Simon on Never Mind The Buzzcocks.

Linking to TVTropes should be considered a warcrime. I'm not even sure how long that was... 2 hours? 3? More? I don't know.

>:D WAHAHAHAHA.

I dunno, seems like TvTropes could stop wars. You'd be too busy reading it to start a war.

You wrote "Jason" I thought "omgwhatjasontoddisdeadagain?! No! No! When? How Wh... oh, wait, wrong Jason"

I facepalm at my own fannishness.

And the reference is not accidental:
http://media.comics.ign.com/media/143/14349574/img_7049199.html

It clarifies just why they want Barry so soon--efficiency in mass numbers. He's racking up the energy percentage. This guy is a pure, unstoppable killing machine, systematically killing the town one by one, and just seeing him registers lots of juicy fear.

Heh. Hopefully they'll keep the % gimmick through all of the tie-in's, as it gives a rather effective way to indicate the relative timeline (for example, since 3.44% is greater than any number that appears in Blackest Night 2, this takes place after Blackest Night 2.)

Date: 2009-08-15 04:45 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] statham1986.insanejournal.com
Is it a gimmick, or relevant to the story? I was under the impression that it's building to 100% throughout the story and tie-ins, and that the GL's are generally screwed when 100% is reached.

Date: 2009-08-15 05:00 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] thokstar.insanejournal.com
OK, it's not a gimmick. I just like that it can be used in this secondary way (as a timeline for the tie-ins.)

I'm not so sure though. When they killed the hawks, yes elongated man's ring went up to .01% after absorbing a heart, but then when Sue did the same with the other's, the ring went up to .02%.

The only way that can make sense seems to be an overall count of all the corps kills...

Though on the contrary, i'd think death might need more than 1 million kills to power up, especially if it's spread out over the whole universe, but ok.

Great cover, but the inside is penciled by Eddy Barrows. Damn.

This feels like the horror of having Michael Myers or Jason running around

I read Michael Myers, and thought Mike Myers. Then I got a truly lulzy image of Austin Powers chasing Jason with a chainsaw.

Don't worry! If Barrows keeps up his usual track record, then he'll do one issue and flee, like he did with Action Comics.

I must be the only person who doesn't really care either way for Eddie Barrows. His art is pretty much just the very minimum requirement for me.

I'll take any excuse I can to use a Clois icon

Smallville, home of Superman? People know Superman's from Smallville now?

Cause you think that would make his secret identity really obvious. Who's from Smallville and currently lives in Metropolis, like Superman? Gee, Clark Kent is. Who married the woman Superman seemed to be in love with? Wow, that's also Clark Kent. Damn, this is weird...

Oh, don't start that again! Clark Kent wears glasses. Superman doesn't wear glasses.
He wouldn't be able to see!
From: [identity profile] tanetris.insanejournal.com
Have you checked him for contact lenses?
From: (Anonymous)
Not to mention, Smallville just made itself a huge-ass target for any supervillian wanting to get back at Superman.

"Hmmmm...home of Superman, eh?" *kaboom*
From: [identity profile] jlroberson.insanejournal.com
From the looks of the preview, Smallville is about to be the new Coast City.

This actually bothered me, and I guess it's supposed to.
From: [identity profile] kenn_el.insanejournal.com
Smallville might just be strapped for cash and laying claim to any celeb who spent more than two minutes in town. I've been to some of those towns. There's probably a Lex Luthor sign as well. And one for Pete Ross.
From: [identity profile] jlroberson.insanejournal.com
Well, their cash problems will soon be over.
From: [identity profile] thatnickguy.insanejournal.com
Look, it's VERY simple:

Superman flies.

Clark Kent doesn't.

DUH.

Not to mention that Superman's left Earth behind for New Krypton while Clark Kent...seriously, what is the excuse there? I seem to have totally missed it.
From: [identity profile] jlroberson.insanejournal.com
Possibly on book leave?

Better start typing, Clark.

Also: his dad just died. There's another possible excuse.

And on vacation from the wife, too?
From: [identity profile] jcbaggee.insanejournal.com
The official excuse was that he's still in Smallville helping Ma Kent get straight after Pa's death.

Damn that looks good. Kinda makes me want to see Black Lantern Kal-L tear through New Krypton though.

THAT would be awesome to see.

well, i guess in a sense they all should be dead...

From: [identity profile] 04nbod.insanejournal.com
that sign makes no sense because Smallvillians don't know that it is the home of superman and Metropolis has a similar sign 'home of superman, Supergirl and Krypto'

I have to say, the show-don't-tell approach to the deaths is really effective. Horror; without so much as a drop of blood being shown onscreen. The slow upward creep of the rings level of power is fabulously nasty

Date: 2009-08-15 10:18 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] thokstar.insanejournal.com
Agreed. Also, the fact that Black Lantern Kal-L doesn't need to wait for them to show emotion; when he shows up, everybody feels fear.

Date: 2009-08-16 03:26 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] ashtoreth.insanejournal.com
Does anybody have the slightest idea if there's any point to the emotion checks? Are they collecting particular emotions? Hawkman and Hawkgirl were killed when they registered love. Is 'will' sufficient--have they killed anybody registering that way?

Date: 2009-08-16 03:28 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] thokstar.insanejournal.com
They seem to be collecting emotions to power up the Black Lantern.

The Black Lanterns have tried to kill Green Lanterns when they've registered will; every Green Lantern they've attacked has had that emotion (except for Guy, who registered rage.)

From: [identity profile] jlroberson.insanejournal.com
They didn't kill Garth until he registered "Hope." They could have easily done so up to that moment. And Tula said that was what she'd been waiting for. Also, the soldiers who were in the plane with the Batman villains who were killed--like with bullets--by the rings were not revived. So it appears that the target has to be "ripe" in that way before plucking the heart.

Though really, if one of these fuckers is coming at you, you're gonna be feeling SOMEthing.

But the whole point of their talking to their prey before killing seems to be to make sure the emotion rises. Which is why they talk like angry versions of themselves. Except the clue in all this that Nekron, not they, are talking is this: DOLPHIN COULDN'T TALK. Yet she says plenty, even with most of her head gone, during the Mercy Reef attack.
