Can anyone say for certain whether or not a "virulent virus" is redundant?

The etymology is related, but "virulent" usually refers to poisons or diseases (it means something to the effect of "highly infectious", which is kind of an inherent, if not defining, trait of viruses), so if it isn't redundant than it's likely misused.
