How much am I loving that Karen's a competent, intelligent buissness woman here? Answer: so very, very much.

She is?

Maybe we're reading different dialog... I just read a series of complaints that her company is days behind on payroll, has no marketing, the boss has absolutely no knowledge of the product that her R&D people are working on, and she's sleeping in the office to boot.

Nothing about that screams "competent" to me.

She's in the very beginning stages of a tech startup. From what I've read, that's pretty typical.

Plus, she's still hiring a staff.

Not a competently-run one. For one thing, in most jurisdictions, being late with your payroll is literally illegal. (And especially egregious if she has access to another account that payroll could be drawn from-- according to this, she's just late with payroll because nobody's bitched at her yet!)

A real tech startup would:
1) Be running off VC at this point-- now obtaining VC, *that* is an interesting story worth telling. If she had VC, she'd never be allowed to skip-out on payroll.
2) Be run out of a garage, or some guy's apartment, not a leased office building. See the movie Primer if you want to see what a real startup looks like, at least before they get into the time travel stuff.

(I know I'm obsessed about payroll, but from my experience with small businesses, if they miss payroll by more than 48 hours or so, *get out*. Very very businesses can recover from that, and any longer you work will just be more time you worked with no pay.)

I thought her business is pretty much funded by her. I have worked with a few self-funded high tech start-ups and frankly late payroll does happen. Of course that was in the good old days (i.e. before this year) when everyone was was willing to suffer through it to get points or shares.

Honestly, though I do think this is just her not paying attention. It would be pretty funny to see have go before a VC. I am sure she would give her pitch and half the guys wouldn't have heard a thing.:)

Just chiming in to say that everyone should indeed watch Primer, but stick around for the time travel stuff, too!

Well, to be completely honest, I haven't the faintest clue about buisness, since I'm still a student. But I just liked that she at least sounded like she was actually in charge and made her own decisions. I'm just glad not to see her as the flaky blond bimbo that's the boss because someone up top thinks she's hot.

She has no idea what her engineers are doing, she has no idea how her company will make money, you have no idea what she said, but you like the tone she used to say it. Power Girl is officially a Pointy-Haired Boss (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pointy-Haired_Boss).

I'm not sure if it's intentional or not, but it does seem a bit like you may be putting down [insanejournal.com profile] bluejaybirdie and her opinions here, rather than just arguing or stating a different opinion. Please remember to not make arguments personal.

I apologize if the previous reply to this came of as an insult to you. My intended target was to mock Power Girl for being able to talk nonsense and still convince readers she was saying something. And I truly don't mean that as a backhanded apology, chattering buzzwords is a talent that even gets me sometimes.

Let me save you some time. Nothing you say will convince anyone that any part of "our startup bleeding money, we have no idea what R&D is doing, and we have no product to sell...during a recession" is a bad thing. I've been trying for two days now, and all I get back is, "Isn't she a great CEO."

Just, save yourself the effort and heart ache.

considering her supporting cast is meant to be humorous it's a bit early to presume this is bad.

She's doing this as a lark. I have no idea if she's a good or bad CEO. I just happen to think it doesn't matter even slightly. It's no mark against her

Yeah, it's always funny when the good guy is the one not paying their employees. Ha, ha, ha, ha! Maybe when he comes back from the dead, Batman can run a ponzi scheme for laughs.

(See what I mean?)

She says she has backup accounts. SUggests it's just an accounting snafu. And considering the stuff they're working on looks to be at least a little bit like the kind of stuff you'd see in Eureka(mad, but not evil, scientists creating weird ass shit without necessarily ever having practical uses) I'm not even sure they deserve pay.

Heh, nice.

Twitter needs to pull an AOL: get some totally clueless dead-tree media to buy your worthless business out. Steve Case is an utter genius.

Wow, you weren't joking. So much denial!

Look, folks, even if *some* CEO of start-ups don't know how to monetize their product(s), ALL of them know what their products are. I repeat, they all know what they produce/what they do.

So much fail!

I mean, yeah, it's not actually competent, but I think she's meant to be competent (if a little harried and not completely on top of everything) so I'm willing to look past that and sort of accept it if the rest of it turns out good, you know?
