Or, silent movies in comic form.

Seven scans from Avengers vol. 3, #49.

Kang has once again launched an offensive against Earth, after weakening the Avengers by putting them through battle against old enemies. In an attempt at retaliation, a group lead by Captain America and Iron Man launch a space attack against Kang's fortress and another entity called the Triple Evil, but wind up stranded in space after the fight against the latter. Kang, claiming that by attacking his fortress, the Avengers have removed the fight from "fair battlefields", decides to stop being benevolent and start eliminating civilian targets. One of his forcefield rings has enveloped Washington D.C., keeping all civilians and politicians from escaping as Kang attacks with Sentinels he commandeered from the US military. A small team of Avengers made up of Thor, Wasp, Wonder Man, and Firebird make it into the shield to take out the Sentinels, only to find out that while Kang's image is holographic enough that they can't hurt him, the reverse definitely isn't true. Wasp comes across a downed helicopter full of Secret Service and the President, and Thor uses Mjolnir to open a portal to get them out. He can't open one big enough for the entire populace, though, so their only chance is to stop Kang. Thor orders Wasp and Firebird through the portal, since he and Wonder Man can survive anything Kang might throw at them.

They still weren't expecting this.

Faced with the prospect of Kang doing this to every other major city on Earth, and having run out of defenses, the governments have no choice but to surrender.

Considering that this was part of the editorially mandated "Nuff Said" silent month, Busiek really took the idea and ran with it.

Considering one of my biggest problems with Busiek's Avengers run was his dialogue (every character speaks in the same Silver Age Hero voice, and with exacting formality like they've each got a stick rammed up their ass), this was possibly my favourite issue of the run ("Kang Dynasty", in general, was his strongest piece of work).

Pretty much why I found JLA/Avengers insufferable to read through.

I can't remember, but I think she was the Avengers chair at this point (or else, had just left the position).

Also, the really important Avengers all needed to be elsewhere, since the signatory was necessarily a POW.

Hard thought it might be to believe given some of her recent portrayals, Jan was a very competent leader, who served with distinction as leader of the Avengers (and the West Coast Avengers IIRC) in the 1980's and 90's.

This story is mentioned often by critics and parodies regarding CIVIL WAR. Kang killed thousands of people, but somehow that wasn't as bad as a small part of Stanford blowing up.

I love Kang's slight, cyan smile; he's not really gloating or anything, he just has this sublime, unnerving sense of self-satisfaction. Very Nyarlathotepesqueish.

funny how something like this, people tend to be more appericative with their super powered community or maybe they justified if there aren't super beings period, it would not happen in the first place. Man sometimes I feel like the mutant books, avengers and monster books are better off if they exist in their own universe because the general marvel population logic is so retarded that can be frustrating. I root for the heroes but for the people they protect. Okay maybe the few good people that are more understanding liket the heroe's supporting cast.

I wonder why they never mentioned this ever in any marvel comic during civil war and after.

Sometimes I just think some writers just like focusing on their storylines and because it has to be on some level "realistic" i.e. Washington is still around they ignore it or don't bother to look it up and well it just comes off as really stupid, I mean hell I like the Marvel universe but the fact is something like Civil War would not happen in that world.

Kang is a great villain when used right.

My only real problem with Kang in this storyline is I'm not really sure where it leaves him to go. The final image of him slumping beside the dead Marcus Immortus musing that now he has "nothing...but time" is flawless. But, having conquered the world and employed armies numbering in the millions, what does he do next?

I mean, we've seen him in Young Avengers, which introduces a brilliantly-conceived new wrinkle, but, as an adult supervillain, I think "Kang Dynasty" makes new serious stories with him hard to tell. He's already come as far as any villain in the MU ever has, and he lost. Can you really go back to the Avengers versus Kang solo and present it as anything other than a slap-fight by comparison?

Ain't the guy ever worried about wiping out his ancestors and therefore himself form existence?

...and I keep wondering, what does he do when he conquered everything?

...and then I read the wiki on Ravonna, where;

"After ruling Kang's kingdom for a time, and becoming bored, she revived Kang — and stabbed him through the heart.[volume & issue needed] She later revived him again, properly, and the two became lovers until Kang himself became bored and left to reassume his earlier identity of Rama-Tut and battle his younger self."

Geeeeeeeez.

If you cannot stand beside me. If there isn't love, there is only pride.

It would have been interesting if at the end of Young Avengers: Sidekicks, Iron Lad managed to stay, thus wiping out Kang at last...the world doesn't end, because damn it, Kang changes history all the time, the Avengers just meets differently, and we have a meaningful messages about how villains are best stopped in their youth via redemption.
