Mary Jane in Spider-Man: Blue

In my last post I shared Peter and Mary Jane's first date, now here's Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale's take on their early relationship from Spider-Man: Blue. I'm honestly not a fan of the writing (for starters, the "guy holed up in the dark attic making tapes for his dead girlfriend" framing device struck me as creepy rather than bittersweet) but I love how Sale draws MJ.

I disagree. The only real difference I can see here is the lack of hipster dialogue.

Peter acting like a dick is difficult for most fans. Yes, Peter Parker is supposed to be an everyman, but he's a very moral everyman who is obsessed with acting responsible.

Trying to do the responsible thing at the right time (often involving a rampaging super-villain), resulting in another responsible thing NOT being done, can make Peter *seem* like a dick to other characters. But *we* know he not a dick... until they decide to start writing him like one.

Ummm.... not a fan of the art that much, aside from taking three pages to do what was nicely done in a single page in the original.



I know Sale uses an exaggerated art style, but come ON, In that double page spread either MJ is closely related to the Munchkins, or Flash makes the Juggernaut look puny.

I just remembered Tim Sale worked on The Long Halloween too. His Selina was drawn much like his MJ - wild-haired and scary-looking.

Seeing as the only time Sale drew Robin was in Dark Victory, I'd say some sort of extra model sheet for same, maybe from an Absolute or special edition collected version (it's not in my vanilla softcover, frex.)

I always saw MJ and Gwen as Betty and Veronica to Peter's Archie Andrews. Even Jughead and Reggie sort of matched Harry and Flash, while Captain Stacy looked like Mr. Lodge (and acted at times like him!). Heck, there's a little Grundy in Aunt May.

This was abit of a let down for me, and I was never really a MJ fan (Gwen!!!) but the ending was utterly heartwarming.

MJ seems kind of.. manic. Compared to the original, there's something missing. And the weird semi-updated clothing makes her look cheaper than she used to.

Plus, yes: creepy Peter!

But all that said. Yay Mary Jaaane.

I wouldn't say cheap, but I think it's funny how the dress Sale gives her in the "Jackpot!" scene is more dated than the clothes she actually wore in the original.
