It's pretty subtle, and I don't want to make an ass of myself talking about things that aren't really there, so I just want to be clear here, but I'm getting a vague impression that Blue Beetle might be from some kind of hispanic background? Is that right? I could be crazy, it's just this really faint sense I'm getting, something about his phrasing, maybe.

Yeah, Teen Titans is probably why I don't want to do my Wednesday Comics Showcase posts anymore, since I'll eventually get to it and will have absolutely nothing nice to say. I just looked at this one and...ugh. Throw in a little more Spanglish, why doncha?

And for reference, Berganza is also the Green Lantern group editor, who had no idea who Nekron was when asked at SDCC's Blackest Night panel. Knowing now that Nekron was in line as the main villain, how in the world?

Jesus Christ. Care to throw anymore gratuitous Spanglish at us, Eddie? I mean, I go to a high school with around a 40% hispanic population, and use lots of Spanish slang and words in everyday speech, but it doesn't work like that. Every other sentance does not have to be in Spanish...

I think this is the first ever Blue Beetle post I've seen that makes me want to facepalm ;_;

As a guy who learned spanish first and has spoken it all his life and then he learned english, I must say something: Mixing Spanish and English DOESN'T WORK THAT WAY!!!
The art isn't bad, but the dialogue... well... you know... it's just horrible.

Eddie Berganza was born in Guatemala and didn't move to the U.S. until he was nine or ten, so he presumably knows a thing or two about how bilingualism works.

Maybe he's an unusual soul who actually does think this way in his head. Maybe he just thinks it sounds cooler. Maybe he thought it'd be more fun to write this way. Whatever the reason though, it seems unlikely it was done out of ignorance, given his own background.
